Who tries to buy the FairTrade coffee beans ?
I do if they are available, quality seems good, but they are dearer and not I'm sure if it's just a gimmick and the benefit is actually getting back to the farmers.

I go into the main shop near Broadway every two to three weeks and get a couple of 250g bags of whatever single origin they've just done that sounds interesting.
Favourites so far are Ethiopian Limu and Tanzanian North AA.
Went in today and bought Yirgacheffe and something called Blue Horse.
Stovetop until I finish rebuilding the single group machine, which is looking like it might happen sooner rather than later with all of this coffee talk.
The caffeine levels must have dropped on this thread....
My coffee making journey has been a bit like owning the Land Rover...accessories by stealth.
I'm the barista in the family.
SWMBSMC (She Who Must Be Served Morning Coffee) has made it clear that this is my responsibility and that default is tantamount to infidelity.
Her irrational attachment to her stove-top appliance and the brew that it produced had me puzzled but to keep the peace I persisted. That is until my mediocre Breville espresso was salvaged from storage and found its place on the bench in the kitchen of the new house.
Reluctantly she admitted that the coffee was better.
I suggested that we should try coffee other than lavazza and she being an organic and free trade advocate agreed to a visit Toby's. Preground coffee (fine grind) Timor and Aceh was purchased and eventually the Breville just managed to squeeze out a cup or two of quite nice brew.
Reluctantly she admitted that the coffee was better.
I protested that the Breville could never cope with the coffee as ground and that a new coffee machine was required. So at my expense I bought the Sunbeam double thermo block(I was tempted by much more exotic machinery). It was received with the rolling of eyes and a tut tut.
Reluctantly she admitted that the coffee was better.
It seemed that the grind was too fine and I had trouble consistantly producing the perfect cup. So having read much good about the Sunbeam Grinder I ventured forth under the cover of darkness and bought the grinder. We had run out of coffee so off to Toby's she and I go. When asked whether I wanted beans or ground I replied "beans" at which point I had to confess that I had bought another bench invader. More tut tuts and rotating eyeballs.
Reluctantly she admits that the coffee is better.
Now all I have to work out is what we do when we go camping.![]()

I've given up. I need to sell my Solis SL90 Crema espresso machine and Iberital Challenge doserless grinder. I haven't used them for ages.

I have to confess that I must be a coffee philistine. I use a Russell Hobs spinny blade thing which makes just enough for one batch of coffee so its always fresh. $30 from Harvey Norman. Works fine for me. But then I use a Breville coffee maker, which I got for my birthday last year. $60 on special, I heard. Oh, the shame!
I am avoiding coffeesnobs like the plague! I'm not Dutch for nothing.
Oh, I enjoy my coffee. So does Trudi.

I have a sunbeam grinder and it works well and I am happy with it , however I still need to work out the exact grind that works the best in the machine. I have noticed that the tamp of the coffee makes a difference to the result.
I bought an expresso machine from Aldi a few months ago.
It is working well and I am happy with it
Still not making any coffee at home, but I've had two cups of Toby's, and one Antilles today, all flat whites
We're big into herbal teas ATM, all cultivated form local paddocks and creeks by a nearby herbalist.
Have one in the plunger as I type, called a Tonic tea, it contains cleavers, dandelion, nettle, red clover and peppermint.
Of a morning we are having a Winter Tea, which is peppermint, yarrow and elder flowers.
