in my opinion you are better using a credit card to pay thru paypal than a bank account or balance in paypal in my experience. if paypal dont then you can usually do a complaint etc through the card company with more success as the seller has to justify which is usually a tougher process than paypal's process.

again this is based solely on my experiences.

been with paypal since early 2002 and never had an experience that left me out of pocket, but i do know people that have suffered at their hands.

their is an inherent risk in any transaction that doesnt occur within arms reach :P

I got a $22 refund paid thru PayPal into my PayPal acct., as it was less than $25 they wouldn't release it to me, seems there is a $25 minimum limit, I had to threaten to report them to Government authorities, still took 2 months to get my money, cant fault them for paying for purchases though, Regards Frank.

Have used Paypal for about 5 years as a buyer and about 6 months (through work) as a seller.

IIRC as of April 2008 eBay Australia will not permit any payment method other than Paypal (triggering an investigation by the ACCC)

My only complaint is that it does not like to be linked to a credit card by default, and every time I pay I have to change the source of funds back to cc from bank account.

Otherwise it seems to work fine.

I believe they have changed it....

    Credit cards
From 17 June if you do not have a PayPal account you can pay for your purchases with Visa or Mastercard and your transaction can also be covered up to $20,000 with PayPal Buyer Protection

My experience with Paypal is mixed. When it's works, it's great. When it doesn't, their guarantees aren't worth a thing, and you are at the mercy of the person dealing with the dispute, who may or may not actually bother to understand the details. Think of them as a convenience and not a safety net.

I always use a credit card, not a bank account. I also tend to use my UK credit card for non-Australian transactions, as the consumer credit laws there means they have to take responsibility for issues when the seller or Paypal won't!

Oh, and for the US opinion on Paypal, take a look here. Some real eye openers there for the fans!!
