i get low 11's, big roof rack and tweeked
Mmmmm the never ending question.......
Mine changes with weight, speed, load, wind direction and which way I hold my tongue as well as where I get my fuel from.
My main problem is that normally even after along trip I still drive around for a week around melb so my readings arnt all that good because of that.
BUT in saying that :
- Empty running at 100kms, around......>10ltrs/100kms
- Loaded with gear (normal condition)..>12ltrs/100kms
- Towing, head wind or over 110kmh....Up to 15ltrs/100kms
Another BUT :
- Check the normal stuff, air cleaner etc
- If it is lifted, taller tyres will stuff economy
- Check your valve clearences
- Change the timing belt and make sure it is timed properly and not ever so slightly retarded as this stuffs your economy as well as if it is due for a change it will have stretched and that retards the pump as well.
- Fuel quality plays havoc with economy in all engines
You should be getting better, my first tank full in our Disco I got mid 9's out of but plenty has changed since with both the Disco and fuel quality.
11.5 with roof racks/ladders and loaded with work gear for part of last fill, towing camper trailer for part of and about 200km with roof racks and no ladders. Combination of highway and town

After 400k on original injectors mine still gets 700kms out of 70-72ltrs of fuel. Pat
My wife and I have travelled in excess of 200,000 kms in a defender 300 tdi !!!!! the average would be approximately 12 l/100 km !
11-12.5 l/100km with my work gear + ladders, bar work, etc and 33" muddies on the 130.
Also remember that only those of us running 33.3" tyres have a true odometer (km/100km) reading ;)
7.50/16's and 235/85's make the speedo and odo run 7-8% out, so the mpg's appear better than they actually are......
Mate I have 275K on the 300tdi Febder clock and run around on average at 10.5 to 11.5l per hundred.
When I got her some six months ago fuel economy wash trash. Took It to Graheme Cooper Auto in Syd. They did a Full Dyno tune and ended up getting about 3 L per 100 better and 17% better power out of the old girl. I would reccomend a good tune up.
Hell yeah! We get 12.5l/100km towing our 16 foot caravan at 90 km/h :eek:Quote:

Is your speedo/odo calibrated correctly ?
Non standard sized tyres or gearing can make it inaccurate, and therefore your fuel consumption calcs will also be out.
Best way to check it is to do a run with a GPS. If what you're reading on the speedo is within 5% of the GPS speed reading you should be OK.
