The books are highly sought after and the asking prices at ebay and amazon, etc are quite steep to say the least.
If I were you I'd go for the first edition, i.e the hardback one, as it is the one with coloured pics and a slightly better "feel", higher quality. The second edition has a few updated, mainly in the GPS section, which by now are outdated anyway.

Good luck with your treasure hunt! The book is really worth it.

As old as this thread is, i,d only heard about this book about a month ago and decided to see if i could get/track down a copy.
So, the results are,,i,m now own a 1st edition, hard cover, very good condition, plastic covered, ex library edition.
The price,,steep?,,sure,,,well, i certainly didn,t knock back the 10% discount offered, something i didn,t expect.
No, i don,t think i,ll be reselling it,,it should occupy most of easter, reading it.
    Cheers all.

Tom Sheppard's 'The Land Rover Experience' was first published in 1993 and had Land Rover Part No. STC.8545.AA. It is my understanding that it has been out of print (in its original form) for many years (there was a second edition). However, Tom's 2007 book 'Four-by-four Driving' is largely an update of the original with many of the same photos and line drawings. You can buy it from Borders and other book stores in Australia for about $80 though you can mail order one from The Nile book store - Australia's largest bookstore, online book shop for $48.99 plus postage (mine took a little over a week to arrive). 4x4 Driving is almost as good as the original and better in some respects and still very much has a Land Rover bias. With out doubt these books represent the best guide to the actual driving of a 4x4 vehicle I have seen. Should be compulsory reading for any "newbies" and would teach a few things to quite a few old hands (I say without shame).

It was produced in co-operation with Land Rover, but not sure if it an official LR product.

Seems to be out of print. Don't mind if it is paperback or hardback.

    Thanks

Juddy's link to the RGS says that you can mail order it for the eqivalent of AU$113. The Nile book store have advised me they can get a copy for me for AU$92 including postage though delivery is 4-8 weeks.

Serves you right for nicking all of the sunshine...

Mind you, it's still a bargain when you compare it against some of the prices they were going for on e-blag.

My eldest son just returned from the USA this morning and brought me a little pressie. "Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide". Edition 2.1 by Tom Sheppard.

What a good boy. All previous transgressions are forgiven

It's great when the kids remember their old man.
