So far i've had 3 Discovery's, 94 pre update V8 auto, 95 TDi manual, and currently 02 V8 manual, a good cross section of available Disco's...easily the D2 is the best, running costs are working out the same as my previous ones, the comfort factor is miles ahead, and feels much more modern in every way, just a lovely car to commute in, and just like the others, keep on top of maintenance and you have no drama's and a far better all round car IMO.
Just wish i could get the DVD player going!!

Yes they drive nicer and there is more room but why the hell do you need ace......thats right it weighs about 3 tonne and leans too much so they put active suspention control under it to counter act the lean.Quote:

The airbag issue is also something that should come into this because as it stands I havnt heard of anyone that has LEGALY body lifted a D1 or D2 with airbags.
Not that I want to body lift either but there are other mods that are more expensive because of airbags such as fitting bullbars and winches.
In my opinion, Electronics in motor vehicals have just made everything disposable, gone are the days of classic cars, you wont see any 50yo TD5 D2's around in the years to come but there may be a few Tdi's still banging about.
And that's the whole point - now that I own one it is a pleasure to drive in the country where I live.... Now all I have to do is tread lighter on the pedal to justify owning the beast. (My greenie daughter will probably not speak to me now).Quote:

raising a vehicle alters its COG significantly, full air suspension allows the vehicle to perform as well as normal AND raised vehicles.

Ive owned D2 and a D1. I would have to say my D1 is the best of them both:D

Anyway i think the best disco would have to be a d1 with a isuzu 4bd1t:D

ACE is great...a bit of electronica with a real functional purpose on and off road and...um...reasonably reliable with no real servicing requirement (although I have had the fluid replaced despite there being no interval for this)...touch wood :angel:
ACE and polyairs have allowed me to run much softer suspension than I had on my D1 with obvious comfort and offroad benefits...

Full air suspension is a heap of rubbish after a few years, yes it does make a car comfy but the electronic control systems have NEVER been reliable even when new and we have all seen it, even on the D3 when one of the 4wd mags took it out for a test to the cape and it sat it's ass on the ground and needed a computer reboot and reprogram to get it underway again.
Thats what you want in the middle of nowhere isnt it.
If you dont take it off road then it is fine but why not just buy a Commodore or a Falcon if you dont need off road capability, it would be cheaper and they are relatively comfortable or if you want Luxo, get a Beama or Merc for the same money.
As far as airbags go.........PUT YOUR BLOODY SEAT BELT ON.......
Your going to get hurt in a car accident, drive accordingly and then have less accidents......makes more sense to me.
Air bags IMHO dont save all that much more injuries than what would be avoided if people would just be aware that it hurts when you hit the steering wheel or windscreen in an accident.
They are not nessesarilly a life saving device and were originally developed because in the US not all states have mandatory wearing of seat belts so they were (and still are) a SECONDARY restraint device.
If youve ever been punched in the nose buy a 6'10" brick poo house type bloke with a fist the size of a bessa block and just as hard.......well thats what it is like when the airbag goes off in your face.
My old next door neibour is still getting surgery on his eyes and nose from an AU 2 airbag when he had a head on.
The passanger (who didnt have an airbag) only had the bruising from the seatbelt and some cuts from glass where steve had all that plus broken eyesockets and broken nose from the air bag.
Yep real safe for your family.
On the tyre comment, the only tyres Ive ever had that were hard enough to be called solid were Coopers and I got rid of them with the Jeep thanks.

I had a friend who was driving carefully at 60kmh when an idiot coming the other way pushed a third vehicle into his path. What resulted was effectively a 120kmh collision - very nasty; no time to brake. He had his seatbelt on and was driving carefully and correctly - but he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The airbag helped prevent a very serious injury. The other occupant was in a vehicle without airbags and was seriously injured.

Yes there are precautions that need to be taken in their use - but I for one am glad to have one between my face and the steering wheel or windsceen. I'll let those who have to reconstruct maxillas and mandibles describe what a face looks like when it hits the steering wheel, or what it's like to get the glass fragments out of a crushed in frontal bone.
