Hi Taff, the only trouble I've ever had with keeping hens is carpet snakes. The excess food attracts rats which then attracts the snakes. They get in through the wire, eat your hen and then are too fat to get out. They do only tend to take 1 at a time though, unlike the feral dog that broke into our pen.
Hens are great and can also be good pets. Very social animals indeed, although they can be real bitches to each other.

Taff - there are a few options - do you want them to mow your lawn???
A lot of people like "chicken tractors" - note the wheels at one end (look a bit wobbly though).

If you move them around every week or so they will do some of the mowing/weeding for you.
Otherwise, you can build a permanent enclosure like the other pics, with or without a yard.
We have a 15m3 coop, about half has a corrugated iron roof and the rest chickenwire. We let them out every day to graze the backyard (when we have a front fence it will be the whole yard).
Geese are GREAT lawnmowers and weed eaters. And don't dig holes in everything like chooks do.
Ducks are great at controlling snails, slaters and other pests.

also a bit late to be telling me about the snakes and rat's part - better keep that bit of information away from claire ;)
i'm going to relocate the dog's kennels down to near the coop which will also protect the shed and more so the county and my tool's from the gypsie's ( sorry any gypsie's - didn't mean to offend )
will the dogs keep the foxes away and is there any danger to the dogs from the snakes?
isuzu did'nt want a moveable enclosure as they seem really small - the plan is to keep them in the fixed enclosure when we're not home and then let them free when we are - though obviously locking them up at night.
Hmm... I guess dogs are always in danger from snakes where ever they are present together but....
A trick with snakes if you ever get any is get a dog food can and punch out a sharp bit in the middle of the can and poke it in to the can a bit. Put some attractant in it (milk or similar) and when the snake puts his head in to the hole he should not be able to get it out. Here comes the bit with the Axe

Just had heaps of Broccoli,up to a foot in dia!!!! Got Caulis,Broccoli,cabbage,chillies,capsicum ready at the moment,more brassicas coming on.Planted thousands of my giant garlic,they are growing like mad!!! Also have a big asparagus patch,but its dormant for winter.
Havent been cutting firewood this winter so have had plenty of time for my vegies:cool::cool::cool::cool:,the orchard is on the list todo.
