I went diesel gas on my 1998 300tdi and I have never looked back. At present I am running around 8.5l/100k (around town) and have got as low as 8l/100k on a trip. Have just arrived back from north coast having towed my Jayco pop up van at around 1000kg, and first fill was 9.5l/100k. Power is way up and it now cruises at 110kph whereas on diesel you had to work to keep it there. My system is the Hunter version and was fitted at J.D. in Sydney. Price is around $4500 before rebate. Thats ok, I was just thinking it may fix your problem if you were only after a small to medium gain.
As far as top speed goes, mine tops out on standard size rubber (28") at 145kmh and with the 235 85 16 (around 31 1/2") Ive had it at 135kmh and still accelerating but didnt want to go any quicker but with the 4.11 on standard tyres it should only lower top speed by 15% or so, so you should still be at around 118kmh on standard tyres but with 31"s it should improve by another (I think without a calulator) improve by around 3 to 5% or something like that so your still with in the "enough to overtake" speed range.
All this could be completely wrong, I have done the math in my head while writing this post so if someone know more accurate numbers or has a calculator to work it out on the go ahead.
Getting back to the gas, I have heard of them blowing head gaskets and the odd burnt out valves and holed pistons but these were stories only, I havnt seen it and a couple of them were from someone who doesnt even like Diesels and thinks I should have a 5L holden boat anchor in my Disco to make it decent so I would go by them.
I dont see why there would be a problem as technically it should be a richer, colder and more complete burn....in practice.....I dont know...:p
Well, they say it's about an 8 week week so in 10 weeks when I'm asking how to rebuild a tdi you will know not to get the system fitted, lol. Thanks for your help.
