Cheapest p38 I've seen to date, but I would still rather pay more for a classic

Nothing against the P38, I just don't trust them long term although the old mans' 98 Rangie has been pretty good.

Why, if it is registered, is he selling it unregistered? I noticed another Qld seller (of a Defender at $6500) is doing the same thing.

Obviously because it needs a roadworthy to sell registered - and he knows that is going to be expensive (in fact he just about admits it by pointing out a few things that need doing - what I would worry about is the things he knows about but does not point out!)

In Qld. you need a Safety Certificate (RWC) from an Authorised Inspector to transfer registration. Vehicles are commonly offered for sale unregistered where the current owner does not wish to spend any money on the vehicle, or does not want to have to get repeat SC's every two months if the vehicle does not sell. The owner may or may not know of any expensive necessary repairs needed. However with current labour rates around $90 per hour, asnd high spare parts prices, not much work is needed to render such work uneconomical in the case of an older vehicle worth only a few thousand.

The used car trade, bomb dealer segment, reckons any old banger that starts and runs well with an SC, a few months rego. and the four good tyres necessary to get the SC is worth a minimum of $2000. The trade values the SC, rego, and tyres at $1000.

Furthermore, a registered vehicle must have a copy of the Safety Certificate attached to be legally offered for sale in Qld. It is an offence to offer a registered vehicle for sale without an SC. Hence vehicles offered for sale unregistered. The purchaser can then get the necessary SC at their expense.

Interesting. In NSW, a Roadworthy Certificate (pink slip) is not required for private sales, nor to transfer rego.

Qld. does not require annual inspections to renew registration. To transfer registration to another registered owner, or to register an unregistered vehicle, or a vehicle from another state, a certificate is required.

Very interesting - I was sure you were wrong, so I checked the RTA site, and you are right.

I wonder when that changed? Historically a pink slip has been needed to transfer registration, certainly going back to when I first became interested in the forties, and was required when I was last involved in buying or selling a car, only a few years ago. Also fairly recent is not requiring one for new cars (up to three years old), not that I've often had anything to do with cars that new.
