The easiest way is to weld up a frame and cover with marine ply and carpet.

Make sure you use decent size metal for the frame as it can snap on corrugations..Ask slunnie about his first effort!!

10-12mm ply works a treat and then you can add tie downs etc.

My storage systems for both my cars have had a similar design and have survived a couple of desert crossings and the Cape.

    have fun

    hey, thanks for the reply.
The ply and carpet thing were generally what i was going for, as for the frame do you think a frame made from pine would work? unfortunaltly i don't have access to a welder for the time being, not to mention pine is dirt cheap per metre....

how would you fasten in to the car? that is a major thing i need to consider too..

    Cheers,

I made a false floor over my LPG tank in my Disco1. Made from 12mm? MDF and carpeted. Bolted to the existing floor mounts. Not quite finished as I need to make one more lid, modify my cargo barrier to suit the LPG tank and make the fridge mounts easily removable.

Will post up some photos when I get home.

I made my origional defender one from pine as it was a shortterm solution.

Check the floor for kids seat mounts or seatbelt mounts and just find the same thread at a bolt shop.

Then bolt the base of your system straight into that.

Make the base as a sort of square cage then bolt the overall cover onto that. That way they are easily mounted and removed.

Really important to measure the size and decide if the floor can fit in as one or does it need to be in pieces?

Also because of the widethe of the system probably good to have a reinforcing beam under the middle to stop sag.

Make the system install it then mess with the carpet.

Once it is snug you can then add the carpet and it will be very tight and stop movement.

    Have fun!!

Well I think until I get access to a welder I'll go with a pine frame, got to try and hunt down those child restraint points, either that or make my own. I think I'll have to go with a centre support beam and some legs too just to make it strong, have one side for permenant car stuff (eg recovery stuff and oil cause its a LR) and the other I can use.

Unfornatly I think I'll loose abit of space with the frame but then again I should get that back if I weld a frame up latter.

    Cheers for the help,

You don't need to go pine. You can get metal tubes which fit together and you buy the joiners etc... no welding, in fact no power tools at all.

I can't remember the name of the stuff, I have used it in my disco and is great.

Several people on here have used it. I'll get you the name tomorrow.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...r-storage.html

this is mine using the aluminium 1" square i think and cublok fittings which can be brought at bunnings

but as a work of warning i filed down the ends to make it easier to fit together and then once all fitted i drilled 1 hole on each join point and put a rivety in it to make it more secure.

its quite tough to fit the sections together otherwise! and once you bang them in thats it at least my way i had room to play if i got it wrong
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

i've looked into this and used it for some other projects too, great stuff! have you done much corregation driving at all? when talking to a guy today about it he said that he made some out of this and that the repeated flexing caused by off road driving caused them to shear along the plastic joiners, any signs of this showing? he recomended using a bracing for them to make them rigid.

    cheers,

    Linc
