I have just returned from a 9 month stint in the Afghanistan as part of MRTF1. My job was a cavalry Troop SGT, ie actually out there driving the ground with the infantry and engineers, and we spent a lot of time running around in our vehicles securing various routes for transport element movements. For all those arm chair experts out there who like to comment on the security situation in the Tarin Kowt area- get off the computer and get to the recruiting center and get up close and personal to the types of situations depicted in the pictures.

There are a lot of men and women risking there lives and doing everything that they can in a very complex environment and doing it pretty well.

For the uninformed the road from TK to Khandahar took us over 18 hours to traverse, safely with nil enemy contact, for our christmas in 08 and the terrain makes it impossible to secure the entire route - pull up a topographical map on the area.

I have personally had several stoushes with the enemy in afghanistan and have the utmost respect for thier abilities, we had multiple wounded and Cpl Hopkins was not fortunate enough to make it home - so enough of the military incompetence/ blame shiffting B.S - or get out there and give it a go and do a better job yourself.

    Bro,
I suspect there are few on here that have gone loud.

now the bad boys in the A who were set up by our friends the Pakis, armed by the Yanks, taught how to improvise by a few Kiwis and poms, who learnt how from pulling to bits IRA toys if they didn't end up in bits them selfs and who were in part funded by the yanks BLA BLA

any way you had a nice trip, try being a blue eyed boy and tabbing 1/2 of it.

no armchair here, just respect, for before then and the now

Yep you lost me as well T1...

Would you like to dig out some of these examples of "armchair expertise"?

Most of what I have seen in this thread has been most of AULRO being amazed, saddened, impressed, elated, shocked and amused by BBCs presentation of the world as it is.

If anything I have learn't two things from this thread, neither of them military related:

    1) Children will always be children, even in the most dire of circumstances.
    2) "It's never really full until there is at least one goat on top"

As can be seen here with what has to be deemed as near empty loads

b'cos there ain't no goats on top....

    Compared to this load:

where the real 'goat' is actually behind.....pushing the load.

I love the photo of the bus, I can hear the driver saying, "come on, there is a more room at the far end"

The ute is a classic I saw some pics of a Peugeot 404 in India with more people on it than a Toyota Coaster

    Keep posting

Something you wouldn't have seen on the media....

Mate of mine who worked with me in Afghanistan sent me these today. He has a challenging role supporting the US Dept of State's commitment in Somalia. These are photos of the aftermath of the VBIEDD attack of the African Mission Somalia (AMISOM) 17th Sep 09 that were sent with his e-mail below:

"Please excuse a group e-mail but spare time is something that I don't have at the moment. Many thanks for your thoughts either by e-mail or phone. It has been a challenging 3 days. The Somalia Operations Manager is in hospital in Nairobi about to undergo another round of surgery - he suffered an open fracture of the tibia and fibia in his right leg (this is the reason for the current surgery); fractures to his tibia and fibia in his left leg; lacerations of his head; 3 X fractured ribs; and lacerations on his arms and while out of danger he is still listed as Serious but Stable.

We also lost one of our local employees and a LT from the Burundians who was acting as an interpreter to our team. Additionally, we had to coordinate the aero-medical evacuation of 21 X Critical patients (1 of whom died in flight) from Mogadishu to Nairobi; the repatriation of 17 X bodies from Mogadishu to Entebbe (12 of whom we then coordinated the post mortems and embalming before flying them back to Bujumbura, Burundi yesterday).

To say life is hectic would be an understatement. I will be flying into Mogadishu on Tuesday to inspect the site and look at options to go back in. We can't afford to leave a gap in the level of support for the guys doing the hard yards - the AMISOM soldiers.

Attached are a few photos of the aftermath we are very lucky we didn't lose more."

    o Immediate vicinity Managers’s Office

o DI compound entrance to HQ Building

o Air Ops Vehicle on top of the VBIED - notice the larger rims of the VBIED

o External shot of DI compound immediately next to the DI building

    o Internal shot – Manager’s Office.

Mmmmm...methinks there might be a pretty serious security review underway...
