Sababa Guru (See U later - Pashtun) from Afghanistan

From the mountains of Afghanistan...Sababa Guru. If this country can ever return to being a place where people can travel and be treated to the legendary hospitality of the people...I will be the first back....Imagine 4WDing around this joint!!!!

The air here is so clear along way from the pollution of other places.

The same mistakes appear to happen over and over. I wonder what goes on the tender process, is it poor initial specs or worse ??

Glad it isn't my ar$se on the line.

BTW, keep the pics coming, I love them. SWMBO is impressed too.....
YES, the tender process is a joke, its all about retirement plans, ExMill jobs Politics and bribes. It has nothing to do with what the Mill needs or Wants. It has more to do with what we are told to buy to satisfy some one else’s economic needs.

Afghanistan in the big K 2004 12 months, personal security, Hated the place, couldn’t read the place and not enough Kevlar.

Beijing, personal security 3 years early 90s, removed a total of 7 charges from the client’s cars in that time.

Mid early to mid 90s SE Asia, Tri border area ( Thailand, Laos, Cambodia ) Hunting Mow Mow and PP's Mates, Nasty little buggers they are to.

Just back from 2 years in Russia out in the boondocks where the natives think Stalin was a nice guy and they still live in the Cer Cer Cer Pih and you do NOT speak English in public.

Now I clean Pool’s and love it

Just 15mins ago I was talking to someone from the Aavn Bde, and asked him what he thought of them bringing the Tiger Eurocopter to Tarin Kowt....I knew what the answer was already but wanted to hear it from a current unit member....he answered as expected.....'No, they don't have the capability to operate at the altitudes and temps here'...and wait for it.....'Neither does the MRH90'.

What the heck are we spending so much money on rotary wing capability that cannot operate where we are fighting???????!!!!!!!!!

Kabul. Yes, hard to read. I have some photos of the aftermath of the blast of the Indian Embassy from early in the week (a bit gory for here) and a mate of mine were discussing it and we used to comment back in 2006 how it was an event waiting to happen. We had a compound near there in Share-Naw.

Where were U in Kabul? Who were U working for?

China. Sounds interesting. Client obviously had made friends on the way up. I would have suggested he was parking his car in the wrong places if you took 7 devices off it.

I have a mate working in Cambodia now, still clearing ordnance. He loves the place. Another is working in Phnom Phen for a bank..he loves it too.

Russia. Work with a stack of Russians here, all helicopter crews. Good people. I would have a good entree to the place through them.

Indian Embassy, why did that take so long to happen? idiots had minimal Hard security and no idea, but then that place is full of silly compromises.
China and RF same sort of gig China always when noisy when one of your own team changed sides ( locals) hence the imports, we even had a remote control toy car chasing us down the road once. RF was a bit less imaginative, always in a car park always full auto from 20 yards then control shot, and always a client who paid the bucks but wouldn’t listen, and usually didn’t want to pay, or you got paid in cash ( don’t ask where it came from) bloody hard to get cash out of RF. Don’t go to Russia it will do your head in!
Cambodia, the ordnance guys all deserve medals, but then everyone leaves them alone, every one likes them. I was with the Dosh Shar Dor ( Thai border police) it was a bit of a hot area up until 99 now the place is full of backpackers. Loved the place stayed for 3 years the locals really wanted and needed your help. (back then)

RF eh? Yes...some of the stuff we have to try and deal with, but can only explain it as Russian....trying to get aviation parts out of that place...eeeeesh!

If you want to go to a place where you need 24/7 360 x 360 degree radar.....try Africa in general, and South Africa specifically. I worked for 18mths clearing landmines in Mozambique....day to day....loved the place and the people...always challenging. Married a lady from there and we own land and have an extensive family there. She lives in Melbourne while I am here.

The crime and corruption will make your hair stand on end...and all that seems perfectly explainable...then something will happen...and it will be done because of sorcery...what they Inyanga...witch doctor stuff....somethings I will never be able to understand. I may not share their beliefs but I know their beliefs are real to them, and need to be appreciated.

Love Africa. Just now lining up for a Op Mngmt Pan-African job running a service to support the mining industry. Australia thinks we are having a mining boom. Africa has even more...it is all promise...but the potential can be harder to achieve.

RF all the paper work that needs oiling once that’s done the guy who signs it isn’t in today, the place is a head job its Russia.

Africa know a couple of SE Asia guys who are there they like it, I think there is familiar stuff that works, read the face.

The crime and corruption, well that’s sort of everywhere to various degrees, just not in aussie. In fact if you really try to explain the attitudes, most aussies will think your full of ****, but I tell you its hard to come back and try and detune, been here 3 months now and we know on one.

Sothern Laos, they would run around with cats, and then kill them to make it rain. Tattoo themselves ( i prefer Kevlar) and put clay idols in there mouths so they could be closer to Buda if they got killed, Brave little buggers though
But it was a bit of a mad house with the Mow Mow, Monts, Hamong, and the Kamerian all doing there own thing, or just killing each othere.

    Clean32,

Ha ha..paperwork. Try Mozambique, they are Africans who suffered under Portuguese colonialism, and were then intially taught governance by the Russians, East Germans, Chinese, Koreans....yes, you get the picture. It is a real gem of a country though, and with our land and a house there it is a place I am seriously considering moving to as things become increasingly unaffordable in Australia...it is nice to have a choice.

I know what you mean about the reverse culture shock. I find I just keep my mouth shut in front of most people, unless they know me and ask. For most people, their ability to comprehend is limited by the world they have lived in, like most people anywhere...it is just how it is.

Plenty of corruption in Australia, just look at every cardboard box around you and wonder how much money Richard Pratt grafted out of everyone of us. Yes, I know, it is different...you can generally rely on a Copper not to stick out his hand and ask for a little bit of 'oil', or 'Chai money'.

Stick with what you are doing, and in time, it wil become normal but, you will always have your memories. Write them down. Your kids need to know, as do your grandkids.
