The reason they are scarce in Australia is because the "deluxe" bonnet was known here as the station wagon bonnet. Standard equipment on Series III wagons. Relatively few were sold here because for much of the early Series III production almost all wagons went to fill a big order from the UN. At one time at Leyland we were taking retail orders for wagons (and Range Rovers) without any idea when we might receive supply and how many.

Ergo, no bonnets available in Oz as very few vehicles available to part out.

    Mozambique

Been on some leave. Just now back in Kampala, Uganda, after spending most of the day travelling from Maputo, in Mozambique.

Have so much to tell and so many photos to upload.

One thing I noted with my wife was as to how many Landy's we were seeing on a daily basis in Maputo. So, I thought I'd measure it. I took a drive and was out and around about town, from the richest, to the poorest and I took photos of all Landys I could. Besides these, there were also others speeding past etc, that I could not snap.

Many of them, especially the Defender/Counties are with aid organizations but, what was interesting to me, was the number of Series vehicles around in the poor parts of town. Real work vehicles, doing real work, in conditions and doing things that are a bit difficult to imagine at times.

These photos were all taken between 1000-1130h on last Friday, a normal day in town ( ...while my missus was getting her hair done!):

This is the only Land Rover "Dealership" I've seen in Maputo but, it only had these two vehicles in their yard:

These blokes were doing an engine change out...right beside the road:

I related to them, in Portuguese, how I had a 1967 Series 2A...I don't think they knew Landies had been around that long...and longer.

Getting back into the 'monied' side of town:

and yes...that is a rat near the RH rear wheel....it is Africa!

There were three at this intersection, if you look closely:

This bloke was really checking me out as I photographed his vehicle:

In addition to these, I would have seen more than 6 others driving in traffic.

How many Landies do you see in a 1.5 hr drive around town?

Enough grounds for starting up a Mozambican LRO's?

I bet they are still overpriced

Great pics BBC - do you know what the "80" on the back of the 90 is for? (Or is that a specially short 90?)

    Sleepy,

Note the "80" is also on the back of a number of the Series 3's as well.

It is a registration requirement because, they have been registered as trucks and the "80" sticker is some sort of 'speed limit' attempt. Mind you though, some of the Series would be definitely unsafe exceeding 80km/h.

    Land of Landrover

Africa is certainly the land of Landrover. Although Australia was statistically the largest importer of the series landrovers, Africa would definately have to be the continent to claim the largest numbers by a long shot.

In Africa you see very few Landcruisers in comarrisson and the older model Land Rovers are still running strong while maintained under the conditions depicted in these terrific photos.

I owned a series 3 stationwagon in during my short stay in Namibia and was so pleasantly surprised to feel hear and smell the same characteristics as those of the Land Rovers I grew up with. The only real difference was the smell of the anti-sniffing additive in the African fuel.

It was in my first drive of my African Land Rover that I found this grave in Pretoria, SA occupied by the bodies of Harry Morant and Peter Handcock.

Africa is a treasure trove of Land Rover antiquities!!
