    Lost in translation.....

In Portuguese, 'ar' translated into English, is 'air'....

'Service' translated from English, into Portuguese, comes out as 'serviço'.

But, when you try to to make a business name, for a company that provides services to airlines, and you try and combine Portuguese and English.....it just doesn't read very well.....

    Landies....keep on keeping on.

    Saw this today.

Landies, even when they aren't going, can still serve a purpose:

This is in Pemba. I've just come back from an interesting and busy few weeks down in Maputo, preparing and submitting tender documentation.

Was witness to this public protest that pretty much closed the town for the day:

gulftoday.ae | Transport protests put thousands on foot in Maputo

No two days are the same here.

Planning to do some drives to go and recce two different places.

Dhlakama & Renamo have become increasingly irrelevant in Mozambique and Dhlakama has resorted to brinksmanship by returning to their war time locale in Gorongosa.

Frelimo have been trying to portray that they have little interest in his demands...outwardly. Inwardly, I am sure they are working feverishly to increase Renamo's irrelevance....no two days are the same in this part of the world.

    Ilha de Moçambique

Have had a very enjoyable trip from Pemba, Cabo Delgado Province, down to Nacala, in Nampula Province. While there I took some time to go visit Ilha de Moçambique, which has been one of my lifetime aims, since I first read about the place.

Ilha de Moçambique is UNESCO World Heritage site, and is the oldest European settlement in the southern hemisphere. Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498 and then, the Portuguese displaced (that is a 'kind' way to say...they belted them off it) the Arabs from it in 1507.....read about the amazing history of it here:[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_Mozambique"]Island of Mozambique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

    Our mate...Vasco da Gama.

and yes...there was a Landy there!

A very significant place to visit and, it won't be my last time. I intend to bring my wife here and stay on the island and just absorb the place.

Then, coming over the bridge and back onto the mainland, I noted there was a Commonwealth War Grave; something I had to view.

    A great day.

    Nampula - Pemba

Then, yesterday, I drove back from Nacala, in Nampula Province, to Pemba.

A beautiful part of the world, have a look at the inselbergs that rise up out of the African plains, inspiring.

and. tomorrow, a drive up to the border with Tanzania.

    Pemba to Palma, and back.

Arrived back in Pemba late yesterday afternoon after a long drive. Palma is up in the very north of Mozambique and is to become the LNG production centre for the gas to be extracted by the US company ANadarko, out of their concessions in the offshore geographical feature called, the Rovuma Basin.

Huge money is being, and more is yet to come. Nearly 400km of road is currently being renovated/built, along with bridges. The LNG plant to be built is estimated to require 1000 staff, the majority of who, will initially be foreigners.

This is the current main street leading into Palma:

This is the dirt strip currently here. They are to build a new hard strip as part of the LNG plant.

Hope they don't upgrade the terminal....

The estimate of the workforce required to import and construct the LNG plant is 5000, even more foreigners.

The plant is to be on a big piece of the distant land you can see here....unfortunately, it is not going to improve the view:

Massive change coming to a place whose history had been mainly to do with slave trading.

This is typical of the road construction underway, one Brazilian company and a Portuguese company. One section is more than 100km in length and the side roads you have to drive on are as corrugated as you can imagine..a very shu-u-u-u-u-u-ddering ride...of about 2hrs...e pa!

But, the horizons are worth taking in:

I visited a historical place on the way home; Mueda. It was the location where on the 16th June 1960, the Portuguese colonialists massacred 600 locals, which pretty much initiated the revolution.

The locals holding a meeting in Mueda:

Came across a family of Vervets crossing the road:

Up to Dar es Salaam tomorrow.

I simply love the country. Muito obrigado for the pics. It would take several years of holidays for me to see what you have shown me.

I'd love to share a couple of 2M's some time.
