dont think the weight will be a problem, if it can be used to spin up and polish the waste crud from opal mines I think it will handle a little oil...

i should add that you'd also want to disassemble it and thoroghly clean the outer bowl, pump, and fit new hoses, the amount of crap that builds up has to be seen to be believed

Not correct. Oil is in fact lighter than water which is why it floats on top creating big slicks when ships hit rocks etc. That said, the difference isn't worth worrying about in your case.

** EDIT Should have read your post properly!! You are correct. 7kg of oil is MORE (volume) than 7kg of water. **End of Edit

The important thing here would be to feed it in so as not to overload the drum but still maintaining a steady rate of filtration. You might even want to build a header tank with a regulated outlet such as a valve or tap to control the rate rather than dump it in in one go.

    thanks for your replies

adm333 had a good point, i hadn't thought of actually listening to when the cycles happen... makes sense that it would pump the water out before spinning.

all i need is the motor to spin and the pump to pump, so i suppose i could bodge it up as long as i get an older washing machine.

What about checking out your local hydraulics shop for a high volume low pressure spin-on filter head and canister. A bit of plumbing to overhead and underslung drums and away you go.
