If you go the Disco route for serious offroading you will need much more barwork and protection than the Defender, whose bodywork is neater, boxier, narrower, and as far as I can see without referring to the manuals, has better departure and approach angles. So less panel damage with the deefer.
Having said that, there seem to be times (eg loose steep long inclines, large step-ups etc) when a Disco with a V8 and an auto box does have an advantage.
stock the deefers win it hands down...
but put deefer rubber, shocks and springs under a d1 and thats a different kettle of fish, Havent yet tried that on a D2. someone got a spare D2 and about 3 grand they dont want so I can mod one and do some performance reviews?

I would pick a 110 before a Disco of any description for serious offroad work and toughness. But I'm a blouse and love the comfort of my RRC...

We had many Land Rovers but recent progression was a 99 TD5 Defender, went to a TD5 Disco and are going back to a TD5 Defender (06 model) - keeping the Disco as well at this stage.
The first thing I noticed getting back to the Defender was the height to get into the vehicle, second was the noisier cabin and then there was the turning circle. Also you get spoilt by things such as electric mirrors and a good A/C system in the Disco and front passenger leg room. As for the seats, we can cover 4500kms in a bit over 4 days in both TD5 Disco or Defender and have no back ache issues with either vehicle. Both tow well. I think the Disco is about 1 litre / 100 kms better but I haven't checked our new Defender yet.
Having said that anyone getting a 4wd has to determing what they want out of their vehicle. I feel the Defender is far more capable off road in a lot of ways as have been discussed. This especially applies to towing a boat in rough or sand terrain. I am looking forward to see if TC works as our previous Defender didn't have ABS. Cheers, Erich.

When the little fella's a little older we are looking at doing an Australian trip and was considering the defender. But definitely keeping the D2 Td5 Auto for the job....

you might drive a defender
And nobody has mentioned sitting in a Defender to drive to the camping spot and then taking the seat out to use it around the campfire ...:wasntme:
