sorry mis information
I am taking the kids to the snow somewhere local to melb. Thinking Mount Donna Buang at this stage. Other family have ML merc, and while there I would like to get the tyres in the snow, without risking getting stuck or scratching the ML, so we would need a very easy and flat snowy area to 4x4 in. So does anyone know any places where the kids can play and we can have a play in the 4x4's too?
(does not have to be commercialised, I would actually prefer somewhere with no other people)
Thanks.
sorry mis information
You could head to Mt Selma/Mt Skene or even Mt St Gwinear- though Gwinear is a cost to enter the park
thanks for those ideas, I am looking them up on the map now.
Its not the cost I am trying to avoid but in the past you go to the snow, buy all the stuff your supposed to buy, rent all the stuff your supposed to rent and at the end you feel like you have been to a shopping centre, not the bush in winter. I want to show the kids that there is more to this than all the sideline stuff.
Hi Cary, i know what you mean, i want to take my 2 to the snow as well. Lake Mountain has had some decent dumps and according to the snow report there is 18cm at LM and 9 cm at DB, if we get a good dump Mt Skene is the best bet for free snow frolicking but even Kinglake/Mt St Leonards area can get snow.

If you're up for a longer drive, Mt Buffalo was the best I have ever seen it last weekend.
Limited on mountain facilities, but lots of fun.
Do carry chains. melted mush can turn to hard ice in minutes should a cold blast come through. 4wd doesn't make you slip proof in those conditions
Besides those places mentioned you could look at Lake Mountain ( cross country ski place out east of Marysville ) . Only an hour and a half's drive from Melbourne.
The road further west of Big River turnoff towards Matlock will probably have enough snow on it to get your snow driving fix.
You probably already know all this, but if you're going off the main roads up there, make sure 1) you're not going on a DSE/Parks closed track 2) you and the another car with you have proper recovery points and know how to use them 3) you have some means of communication - dont count on cellphone. An EPIRB is a last resort. 4.) you both have snow chains and recover gear.
You might want to read the other thread about the guy stuck on Mt. Skene who had to be rescued.
thanks for the replys, I think lake mountain is looking good due to it being a day trip and closer in. I dont want to do any 4x4ing even remotely hard, just a bit of snow in the carpark or off somewhere close to the blacktop will do this time.
Hi F4,
We were up at Lake Mtn on the Weekend doing a bit of skating, Very good snow cover on all trails, and by the look of the report appears to have held up most of the week. The only problem we had was the number of people, probably due to the last day of school hols. The trails weren't groomed very well either.
What do you want to do? If the Kids just want to have a play, Donna Buang should be OK, and if your lucky you might find an Uncleared Car park. I nearly got stuck in the car park on Friday night in the Range. Lake Mountain had a few 4X4 tracks down near the Woods Point turnoff but I think they were DSE restricted.
Lake Mountain has a nice Cafe and a Public Day Shelter, but it costs $35 for the car in the gate, and $12 per Adult if you want to Ski the Trails.
If you need any other Advice give a Yell.
Stu
thanks mate, all I am after from this day is a snowman and a bit of mucking around, all kids under 4. I only want to do a bit of wheeling to see what its like driving in snow and same with the ML. Probably go for a short walk.
