    Patrol Question

I know it is not L/R related but a mate is looking at a GU. Was the 3ltr "problem" rectified in the GUIII as opppsed to the GUII. I heard they put a larger oil capacity in it & this fixed the issue (?) Any info would be greatly appreciated as he is keen to buy but is unsure about this. He would love the 4.2 but thinks it would be a better/cheaper option running the 3.0. I know its a L/R site but you have all been pretty cluey in the past.

I have heard of the odd problem in a GU III, but not to the same magnitude as in the GU II

They did report that the problem was solved BUT there have been reports of the later 03 model on still detonating, ExplorOz is a good place to ask, always entertaining watching the replies

It's old, relatively 'dirty', not too economical or powerful but give me the TD42T any day as they go forever with very little going wrong.

Problem fixed in 2005 onwards to be sure

They said they fixed it in late 2004 models but I would be loking at 2005 onwards.

2.8TD also can go "PoP" with more than 200k on them. Also they use a lighter, less tougher gear box coupled to them than the 4.2 Litre engines.

The 3.0 litre 4 cyclinder motor becomes quite responsive with better fuel economy when fitted with a DP Chip unit.

    Yep
What they all said! I know someone had a 3.0 and had zero issues with it. Did Perth - Cape York - Perth no hassles and only recently sold it for a 200 series LC (wanted the Kinetic suspension).

Before I bought the Disco I spent some time looking at Patrols and decided I just couldn't risk the 3.0. A 4.2 turbo is rarer and commands a bigger price tag - for a reason. It took a while to find, but I was about to sign up for a TD42T GU Walkabout, but changes at home meant I had to slash the budget and the D2 was about 9 grand cheaper.

Even with the lighter gearbox, a well maintained 2.8 might be a better option. When I was on Patrol4x4.com I don't recall the 'box being a huge problem - certainly not the way the ZD30 motor was/is.

    Cheers

my brother has a gu 2.8. the gearbox is the same as used in 300zx. can safely handle 400hp and 500nm.

the 2.8 engine isnt bad actually. on our flinders trip i averaged around 10.2l/100kms on the road and he was about 11.5. offroad we didnt bother measuring, but according to the gauges it was relativley even.

performance wise, from a standing start my car is quite a bit faster, but this could be auto vs manual. once upto 80kmh there's barely any difference.

offroad, i'm ashamed to say, his car is alot easier going over the rough stuff and climbing. no wheelspin, wheel-cocking, or bucking around. probably because of the longer wheelbase, which accentuates wheel travel and helps stability. and he has a cdl and alsd in the back. my car never got stuck, nor struggled, but i could feel and see a bit more effort was required from my wheels/TC.
