Sparkplug!!!!
Ive had one fail in 20 years of chainsaw ownership,but it had me stumped.Guys at work have more problems,but the saws dont get looked after too well.
It sparked fine when testing,but the saw wouldnt fire at all,it also did a few strange issuse like yours as it died.
Turned out the sparkplug wouldnt fire whilst under compression,new plug and it returned to normal.

Check that there is a healthy spark & if so Crash is on the money with a clogged fuel filter diagnosis, maybe kinked fuel line. I had one that the fuel line split inside the tank, that was fun to diagnose

If it was blowing smoke then the plug has oiled up, they are similar symptoms

You didnt mess up the 2 stroke mix????
They wont run too well with too much or not enough oil.
How much oil in how much fuel did you mix or is it a case of how much fuel in the oil,SORRY you did say you dont know about these thing

If its got good compression & u`ve tested the plug 4 spark , spray a little Aerostart down the plughole (Iknow Im gunna cop it 4 this), if it starts then stops it will be a fuel prob. If it does`nt its the ignition, spark plug, lead or coil.

even though mine is a 4 year old stihl, the pickup in the fuel tank disintergrated( its a foam thingy) blocked the pickup. Cheapest part I ever bought cost me $2 and an original part. Being intermittent I reckon it could be fuel orientated. I would suggest Pull it to bits and give it a good clean.

Good call....I dont know a hell of a lot. As far as I am aware it takes unleaded, so have put fuel in the tank and filled up the oil tank as it was low, so I'm figuring I've got at least that part right. For the oil part, that is for the chain...right?

Also while I am it, what is a good chain saw for basic wood cutting and clearing?

I hear what you are saying and I do have quotes for a bloke to come and clear the bulk of it, but I enjoy doing it myself as well, plus handy to chop up some wood for the fire place ,

Oh yea, clean the plug with a wire brush, bit of aerostart down the plug hole and see hopw you go
