Yes you can do it yourself. the td5 diagnostic stuff is very easy to use. They are also very reliable.

Go the D2,you will love it!!!!
get a Nannocom,helps with DIY diagnosis.
Look for ACE(active conering enhancement),it was a $4000 option,they handle like they are on rails!!!
You should be able to get a D2 serviced locally.If you service your old girl,D2 is easy.10000k oil changes in the TD5 with synthetic oil.
I doubt a Praydoo will come anywhere near the TD5 power or economy.
Parts are much cheaper for the D2 than Toyota.Plenty of good suppliers advertise on here,specialists,not dealers.
Cant beat Toyota Service in the country,its your only win with the Praydoo.

Having owned a 2002 D2 v8 and now owning a 2003 3L deisel prado i can safely say the disco wins hands down in all aspects(appart from from consumption but its not far off)

The prado is ok on road, still the d2 with 3in lift 32s and ACE handled way better, interior wise the prado is pretty but the disco was still more comfortable especially on long trips, off road the disco kills the prado without a doubt. Fuel consumption from the 3l Diesel is up around 12-14L per 100km, the v8 disco was around 18-20L per 100k.

If i had my way we would still have the disco, but the other half didnt agree..... she likes the prado, but still agrees the disco was better off road and handled better.

I expect the answers you will find here will be biased towards the Land Rover. If you ask elsewhere you will find answers skewed towards other models.

It sounds like you have a family, and I doubt you would be satisfied with the cargo space in the D1. The D2 is far better for space especially when touring.

The disco will be better off road and I would get one with ACE. The disco may have some problems but what cars dont. You can read about the 3 amigo's on here which is one of the more common faults.

My father in law has a diesel prado (about 2002 model) and it is very economical, has a massive range and a reasonable amount of space. It's performance is also reasonable. Some people complain about the seats. They are flat to suit a wide range of people. I find the prado a comfortable enough vehicle and would be happy to have one if it was used for touring only.

The off road capability swings me to the disco however.

That's the reason I took a basic '95 update D1 300Tdi to Derby for my daughter.

Steel rims, no computers, diesel. The only electronics are the dash, the radio, central locking (no alarm), the electric windows, and mirrors.

Why didn't you buy it before we brought it back to Sydney?

I dont mind the Prado I drive one daily for work not that I think its a 4x4 I would quite frankly dread driving one on a dirt road.
I know the Disco will beat it off road but that isnt the issue if I want to go off road I will use the Stage 1.
I just need something that will be comfortable for say 1000ks a day I know that a Range Rover Classic would do the job very well but they are getting long in the tooth and NO ONE will work on them in isolated areas although I could do that my self so maybe its not such a bad idea.
Just hate spending my holidays under a car getting greasy while the family frown at the situation from a distance
