some form of electrolysis maybe?
Hi all,
Tony was cleaning out his kit that he keeps in the car & upon looking at his British Army mess tins, he noticed a "hole" in the side. When he opened them up, the cans of soup inside had completely corroded.
We are at a loss to explain what would have caused this. Any ideas?
Interestingly, nothing else was corroded. All the clothes (socks, overalls, sweatshirts, etc) were totally intact & in perfect condition).
The bag was nowhere near a battery.
Rat pee maybe??
How strange![]()
some form of electrolysis maybe?

That would be electrolisis ( cant spell it) the reaction of aluminium touching steel. Had the same thing happen with a metal kfs left in aly mess set.
A bunch of chokos got caught in the same way up sholewater way, none issue water bottles ( aly ) with metal cups canten.

When I'm here I want to be out there.
How long did it take for it to get that bad?

Thanks guys, mystery solved!
That'll teach us! Had a good laugh at your post! I'm saying "What the hell's chokos got to do with anything"... then got pointed out what you meant!
Just told Tony, "But what about the Landy? Doesn't that have aluminium & steel together???" (panic, panic). So ... does that mean I'll have to repaint the SIII to make sure that doesn't happen to my baby???
Where's the smiley thingy for "crying" ...
The reaction between the aluminium and the steel is electrochemical corrosion, not electrolysis.
Hi Panda - could it have been from the stockton trip you did a while ago when the weather was, lets say, less than ideal. Not the driver training trip but the one before.
Pete
The vehicle movement rubbing on the outside of the seam probably producing an air leak, then this mixed with oxygen and a non-neutral pH of the food attacking the seam in the steel... producing a wet, environment filled with aluminium dust (from the pan rubbing on the tin) and iron oxide from the tim itself... add together you have a battery![]()
I know electrochemical corrosion can do this but in a short timehas any one thought, it might be the product in the can and if it was I think I would be changing brands or something and maybe not eating the stuff. consider what it was doing to youre GUT. I know I have opened cans mostly fruit though and have found signs of corrosion in side not that old ever mind you the cans that is.
eat at own risk should be labled on the can.
