Use quality CI-4 rated diesel oil in the engine. Specification is more important than brand. ATF was originally specified for your gearbox but it is far better to use MTF 94 and this is now specified by Land Rover. The transfer case and diffs can use 80W/90.
The hole is for a wading plug. Don't put one in unless you're driving through deep water.
Replace the plastic coolant filler caps on the radiator and thermostat housing with brass ones if this hasn't already been done. A new expansion tank would also be a good idea if you don't know the age of the current one.
Change the timing belt every 70000km.

SupporterCongratulations, (belated because I've been off line for a while), from a fellow '97 Defender owner.
As for the oils, I use Penrite. I've found the MTF (or light gear oil equivalent) to baulk the gear changes a bit (it depends on the indevidual box), and I use the Penrite Synthetic ATF for the gearbox. It's only $30something for 4 litres and better than plain ATF if you find the MTF too thick for you.

guys/girls (sorry to hijack for a bit) what are the wading plug holes for? my disco auto has a similar hole and i thought it was just how its supposed to be?
sorry, i should add, i (now) know that it needs to be plugged when wading, but why not have it always plugged?
