Very proud new owner of a 97 defender

    G'day all

My search is over, althoe i was origliny looking for a 3.9 isuzu this one has come up and it was just to good to let go it's only got 196 000 on the clock and was a single owner so its in very good nick. The kangaroo's have picked on it a bit but that just adds charater. anyway i've got some questions about maintaince if any one can spare the time.

    1. i have heard you don't use the engine oil that is reamended in the manual becouse it is for england climate is this true?

    2. i have also heard that automatic transmision oil in the gearbox makes it change easier could this effect the gearbox?

    3. i can't find any info about what oil to use in transfer, dif's, swivel ball joints etc can anyone advise me?

also thers a picture of a threded hole between the engine and gear box i'm just wondering if it should have a bung in it?

    any info would be grate

    cheers tristan

Mate just run penrite diesel oil in the donk,ATF can be used in the gearbox Castrol transmax M,I run 80/90 in the transfer but 90/140 in the diff's and the threaded hole in the bellhousing is for a wading plug but I don't know anyone that uses them.Use LR one shot grease in the swivels, there should be a sticker on the rad support saying if it is in it already but keep it greased and oiled and pull the rad out and rod it,it would be due replace the coolant and hoses if need be and off you go. Nice rig, that would be a wading plug. Screw in a plug if you take her swimming.

Triso rodding the radiator means taking the tank off one end of the rad and pushing a steal rod through to push out the core.Take it to a radiator shop to get it done,it's about $150 and it will save you alot of pain and money.Tdi's don't like getting hot,too many people on this forum have cooked heads because of it,don't be one of them.
