    Power Saving on a Hot-water system.

    Hi Guys;

    our electricity bill is up the buggery , we suspect it's to do with the small 125L hotwater system we have inplace , it's switched to S/W in Main switchbord as apposed to OPHW , so my question is would I be better off replacing the hotwater system with something larger of lets say 300L and switch to off-peak electricity, and would this be power saving in the long run ????

    for all our heating we use Gas only , we have an outdoor heater attahced to a Gas bottle inside the house and try not to use electricity , only when gas bottles are empty.

    Any tips and advice on this would be much appreciated,

    Agreed, great system, hot water on demand when you need it, no more heating water only to have it sit there unused.

    If you already have gas installed then it makes sense to get a gas heater. I have one of these and can recommend them Bosch - Hydropower - The new generation of hot water systems
    Around $1000 installed although you'll have to get some piping put in no doubt.

    Has you bill always been high or just gone up a lot recently?

    We've got a 250L electric HW system in a townhouse so a 125L system seems pretty small. There are only two of us.
    We don't have the option of off peak electricity so we want to go gas when ours fails.

    be carefull with doing this, outdoor units are designed taking into account there is plenty of ventilation, once inside the house available ventilation is a lot less, pretty sure it is illegal but in saying that we all do that not quite right.....

    just ensure the flame is nice and blue i.e. no yellow in it.

    Either that or solar - you should get a good rebate switching from an electrical system.

    I installed a Bosch hydropower 10H just over 1yr ago. I am happy with it, but have had to have the Bosch service people out twice: wouldn't start when first installed and recently started cutting out. Turns out they all develop a fault with the on/off microswitch - the tech just bypassed the switch, says they do it on all of them since they found that problem - so would be worth getting your installer to do that if you get one.

    If memory serves it was $580 or so from a plumbing place, and $270 install (we had an old gas system).

    Justine;

    going back about 12 months , there has been 4 adults living in this house hold , consequently we have noticed a big jump in power usage only last 12 months or so , people having showers everyday , hot water for cooking , cleaning etc , last quarter we used 1902 kwatts of power...
    is this norma ? it's highest we've used in any quarter.

    As said earlier we use an outdoor heater with a 9 kilo gas bottle attached to heat the house in winter , nice clean heat , we also have a combustion wood heater as well we can use for heating in winter.

    as for Gas in the property we don't have gas Plumbed , and neither do we have a meter installed , got a quote from gas company 3 years ago to install metre on property by Gas company, $1700 buck

    Back to the original question, I presume OPHW is off peak hot water. Shouldn't it be switched to that where the power is cheaper? I thought all hot water units were supposed to be on off peak??

    Highly recommend solar- where you are you should get a good percentage of your hw heating from the solar.
    We put in a SolarHart with electric booster in our last house ( no gas supply ) and were very happy with it.
    When the gas storage one packs up in our present house it will be replaced with a solar system with gas boost.
    If you're prepared to time your hot water use a bit better ( eg have showers and clothes washing at night when the sun heated water is still at its hottest ) you can make even bigger savings.

    Also go through all your rooms and see how much stuff there is on "standby" ( or just left on all the time ). Try and encourage people to switch off things at the wall or main switch. If you turn off as much as you can and go and look at the meter it should be ticking over very slowly. If it is still whizzing around there is something "rogue" sucking power.
