    Whites ain't whites, Sol

    My apologies to Castrol.

As some of you know I recently had two retinal detachments about a week apart in the left eye.

The surgeon couldn't see into the eye to repair the second on as the first operation had made the cataract in that eye go darker. So they had to remove the lens and lens capsule. I'm now aphakik in the left eye which means I can't focus that eye and everything is a blur.

    Until today.

I had a contact lens fitted to the left eye which will tide me over until I can have another operation to fit an intraocular lens.

I said the optometrist, "Through my left eye, your floor is light grey but through my right eye it is brown."

He told me it was due to the cataract in my right eye.

He is right - through my left eye, my white Rangie really is white! Through my right eye it is a really off-white, almost pale brown, colour.

    So whites ain't whites.

As soon as the left eye is fixed, I'll get the cateract removed on the right.

Don't ask how much we've spent so far on my eyes.

Let's say that the govt. medical safety net is a joke.

Medicare says our family (Eliasbeth and I) are $515 out of pocket for the tax year 2007-2008.

I added all the medical and hospital bills, etc, for the financial year and, not including pharmacy, we spent over $25K on medical and got $10K back from Medicare and Defence Health (our health fund). That means we are really more than $10K out of pocket - a far cry from Medicare's figure of $515.

I'm not sure how much of that we can claim on tax.

That $10K is a fair old whack.

I guess that once it is fitted, there is no second chance if it is wrong.

I'd love to know how they are made. I have to search the 'net to see how they fit them when there is no lens capsule.

So now you can close one eye and say black is white, then look through the other eye and say white is black.
