Exclamation I'm 16 and looking for some help about buying a disco

    hi guys,
i am new to this site, but my dad is regularly on it.
we have a 98 disco tdi and we love it, best car we have ever had.

with all the resent rain we have been having in melbourne, we have been heading up to gembrook occasionally and dad and i have been amazed at what our car can do on just road tyres and 2inch lift.

i really want a 4wd and i have been thinking about a nissan patrol for my first car, but after seeing the capability of our disco i am really starting to think is it worth saving up the extra cash for a disco.

any help or adivse would be awesome
    thanks guys
    matt

Matt, just look on ebay - you can get much more Disco for your dollar than a Patrol.

If you do get one, come back on here for all the advice on how to set it up and look after it.

If you're happy to learn from the guys on here, ( and there's some very helpful people ) and you're prepared to work on the car yourself, you can have a lot of fun.

Think about early Range Rovers too - you can pick them up for next to nicks and they have the same basic chassis, suspension and drivetrain as your Dad's car. They will have the V8 engine which will cost you a bit more to run ( look for one on LPG) - but they are a huge amount of fun.

i always wanted a 90 as well, but they are rare as hens teeth in Oz; and the only good ones are about 30-40 k mind you the cheap ones (12-15 k) do pop up every now and then. have you had a look on carpoint.com.au and tradingpost.com.au and the likes, even ebay. there are some cheap 110 defender wagons going around.

    Heres some:
Used LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 1997 - Victoria - CarPoint Australia

Used LAND ROVER DEFENDER 1995 - Queensland - CarPoint Australia

otherwise have a cruise through the markets section on this website

AULRO Classifieds - Message - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds

there are other pages as well

also some would argue a 110 is better offroad (dont want to open a can of worms just saying)

    why start at a disco...

you might be able to pick up an 88 Series for less than both the other vehicles and that will leave you $$ to spare for rego, insurance, upgrades + fuel....

I think if you are young and going to get into land rovers, you should cut your teeth on one of those leaf sprung, drum brake non power steered things that always keeps you on your toes and makes you work your butt off when offroad.

It's my first car and I'm yet to cross over... I'm getting very close though!!!

Gday Matt and good to see you like the Disco, i have a son Matt aswell (10 years old) and we got a S3 SWB and are very slowly doing her up, when he get his liscence the car will be his and he loves her already.

I agree with the suggestion to look on Ebay and there are a couple in QLD, it would be a good test drive home to see how it runs
