When will you upgrade to a D3?

I am looking at throwing in work in a very few ( well depending how the super funds go !) years and doing the "big trip". We'd need to toss up to keep the D1 or go to a D2 or D3. ( or go "off marque" ).
Personally when I look at a D3 it doesn't please the eyes as much as a well set up D2.
I've driven D2 TD5s but not a D3 - even the D2s seem luxurious for us after the D1.
The technology and lack of knowledge/support in the less populated area on the D3s, 07/08 Deffers,and even to some extent a D2 is my primary concern.
It would take some convincing and a real good deal to get me into a D3.

For all it's foibles, I know I'd really miss the D1 - it's sorta part of the family now.

If I am going to spend that much money, I would rather the RRS. I would get one as soon as SWMBO/accountant says I can. That could be any time in the next 5yrs!

I'm so happy with the D1 that I think the D2 on lpg is the next step. That will be in 3.5 years time unless something happens to the D1. I'd prefer the TD5 but cost of Diesel I think will prohibit me getting one.

Personally I don't see why I'd want a D3. I think they are an awesome vehicle but the rear is so ugly. But when it comes down to it seeing how well the D1 goes I don't think I'd ever need or even want what the D3 has to offer.

I have a Disco1 and have had it for 2 years exactly.

Personally I would not buy a Land Rover for my wife. She has no idea about cars and the noises they make so I'm quite happy to see her in a late model Toyota Corolla although she would prefer a Mazda3.

I'd also never consider a vehicle for myself until it can be self repaired. So a Disco2 has aftermarket computer interrogator things available but a Disco3 does not that I'm aware of (people have said in this thread anyway).

Having said that the Land Rover will be my car and I'm not into spending mega bucks on my own cars. So I wouldn't be considering a Disco2 or Disco3 (or Defender) until they get below $10k.
The Disco2 is already down there but I promised myself I would keep the Disco1 for at least 3 years as that would mean $2.5k depreciation a year on initial purchase price assuming I just dumped the car after the 3 years.

I'm with Lucy. If you're going to spend that much you might as well get a RRS.

For me - I wouldn't be able to treat a D3 the way we treat a D1 on the farm. They are just too fancy. D1's have a nice balance of simplicity and comfort/luxury. Parts are still readily available and your average mechanic has a good chance of fixing it.

i change over the cars every 3 or so years as they are company vehicles.the d2 was due to go a year or so ago,but i just couldnt part with it.....:(

we dont do the k's we used to do,so mileage is pretty low,also it has been virtually problem free,so why get rid of it?

the other problem is what to replace it with...i feel the d3 is too complex,servicing is also more expensive than the d2,although others may disagree

mrs scarry has to have an auto,so thats the end of the defender:(

she dosnt like the size of the 200 series or the pootrol
looked at the prado,to light....not mutch more than a shopping trolly....not good value..dont want a pajero

i've got the work van,so she drives the d2 during the week

wouldnt mind a rrs,but they are complex as well,and depreciation is pretty horendus,the more$ you spend the more your gonna loose at change over time

so its in the too hard basket while the d2 is going fine........more than likely,eventually we will end up with a d3....now petrol or diesel?...we wont go there at the moment:D

As soon as I get a job in mining/oil industry I'll get one.

Ok, from someone who has gone from a D3 to a D2, with the D3 being first LR ever owned.........the D3 leaves the D2 for dead. Don't get me wrong, I have grown to love my D2...but it aint no D3. Now obviously you are not going to use the D3 as a working vehicle or a knock about vehicle....15yrs time maybe, but not now.

I did over 100,000 kms in my D3, so in terms of the luddites and their..oh no it has electrics.....which modern vehicle doesn't? If anything, the few issues I had with it......were mechanical, but overall was brilliant. On road it was an exceptional vehicle to drive, practical luxury, good space and load space, excellent set up with the 7 seats and some nice bells and whistles.

Off road, with standard HP road tyres, it always amazed people with its ability with standard tyres. Once I got some half decent rubber, even better. Though still this is still its downfall.....decent rubber....though this is changing with the likes of Mickey Thompson and BFG with decent rubber in 18's. Even with the tyre issue, there was not much I didnt tackle that better set up rigs ie modded versus standard. Of course you are not going to do hard core, but lets face it, how many out there actually do?

So from someone who has actually owned a D3, done over 100k in travel, taken it off road and not just down dirt trails, but really tested its capabilities and had the scratches and minor damage to prove it, it is an excellent all round vehicle.

As for looks..................bloody beautiful, best looking Disco to date...hands down...it has presence and style and well thought out. Yes it is expensive to start with....but what LR wasn't when they first came out. My 03 D2 was $60k+ new and soon will be modded. Now days there is hardly a mod that cannot be done to a D3..........in 05 when I got mine...squat. Of course there will be divided opinion, thats part and parcel, I would also get a new Fender as well, depending on what I was doing it would be a toss between the 2 as they are both great vehicles.

Now I just have to wait to get my baby back...... 4 yrs and 8 mths and counting :cool:.

Not a real big fan of the D3;) They look like a van and are just to square looking for me.But i am biased because i have a D1:D If i was to upgrade it would be to a D2.Better looking in my opinion then the D3.In the D1 i dont mind getting it scratched and muddy.I can go through water without worrying about all my electrics frying.Not that there is much! If you were to get your D3 submerged i would hate to see the bill for it:eek::eek: To many fancy electrics for my liking.But i guess everyone is different.
