When will you upgrade to a D3?

One of the problems with the D3 is its just so bloody big !!!

I do off-roading with a few regular guys and some of the tracks we do, a D3 simply would not fit, even my D2 just about squeezes through where as the
D1 is smaller still.

The thing that would concern me, is the amount of "elecy" gubbins on the D3. The D2 is bad enough, but I cannot imagine how bad a D3 "could" be after say 70,000 miles and then poor DIYer may have some difficult issues.......+ The D2 looks better imo, so I'll keep mine.........(spent to much on it to get rid now!!!) :D

Not sure what you mean by that. Track is only 60-65mm wider and body is only 25mm. Are the tracks that narrow over there?

Agree with all of the above, seriously thinking of keeping mine for another three years. Niggles I can deal with, major repairs I may get extended warranty for, it would only take a turbo to blow to make it pay for itself.

Dealers I have found to be relly good, no arguments about warranty, free loaner no hassles.
Just they are too few and far between.

being a fender lover that is the wrong question to ask me;).....

I LOVE my D1 and as you know it will go a lot of places with not too much trouble......have spent some money on her but what do you expect with 310,00klms on the clock.........BUT when she dies I WILL be buying a defender:D not a D3:(

(though with the money I have spent I shouldn't think that will be for a while)

I love technology...
But I dont like the D3.... I think its plain FUGLY... Not like the sexy lines of a Rangie Sport...

But I also have no need to be in debt yet again for a new 'toy' when the current vehicle is in good condition, is reliable and performs all functions I need admirably.

A change is always nice, but in our climate of environmental responsibility etc, I personally believe that purchasing a new vehicle when its not needed makes no sense.

Also, regardless of whether my D2 needs an entire rebuild (engine etc) its still cheaper than the repayments on a new one...

I could rebuilt and maintain the current vehicle for approx 60% less over 5 years than the repayments / lease on a newie.

To each their own.... Takes all flavours etc...

I just take a bit of offence at the question - "upgrade" - that assumes that the D3 must be better so when are we with D1/D2s going to get with the plan. Perhaps a more neutral question might be "Is anyone going to move to a D3 and if so when and why". Having said that I couldnt care less how the question is framed in terms of my answers.

The D2 was an exceptional value vehicle. When I purchased mine, albeit from a dealer that would shave off a few thou compared to Austral - new in 02 it was $42 including mags and upgraded sound system. That was on the road! The GXL Toyo Cruiser which was the only real competitor off road and even then had gone to IFS and had no traction control and wouldnt go as far off road was about 15k dearer....the Rover had a lot of attraction. It looked far better and was better that the Toyo and had character. But it had value. Having a D1 at home also made the decision easy.

Now, since the 'upgrade' car came out it has increased price insanely...and to get one that can actually hold a candle to the D1/D2 off road you need the SE model or above with TCS etc and thats near as damn it twice as dear as my D2 was.

I also object to the comment above that you cannot compare a $80k car to a 5 year old D2 - I can and the comparo is very favourable to the D2...I think equating ability/good running costs/ good looks/fun/ability in the long run and off road toughness/ and charisma (or character) with high cost is misguided. If that were a good guide then some very expensive lemons would look like good buys by that standard.

Don't thanybody intended any offence.

I would say it is would difficult to argue that the D3 is not an upgrade on previous models. It clearly is in terms of comfort, handling and off road ability (I had a D2 before the D3) but it is like all upgrades more expensive. It could be argued that the extra you get in the upgraded model is not worth it you may have a point and it may well not be for you. I would say the upgraded Lancriser is even less value though.

There are many factors to be taken into account even comparing vehicles if the same year.
The point I was making about comparing a new model to five year old one was that an old 4x4, battered and used is more usful in many ways as I said there are places I woudn't take mine because it cost a lot. But then my sanity has been questioned about where I have taken it.:D
I think it is unfair to compare old and new models on many levels as have pointed out above but improvements in new models are par for the course.
If your current 4x4 works for you why change. I may have still have been driving my D2, which I loved, if I hadn't rolled it :oops2: ...................but I'm glad I'm not.:angel:

Not all of them, but some of them we do in North wales for example, 60-65mm wider would be a big NO NO.........or re-designed bodywork.........

I have no fear of technology, I just know that Land Rovers are built CRAP and they WILL give problems at a later date.

If the D3 was put togther buy germans, it would be outstanding........I will more than likely have one in the future, but for now the D2 rocks !! and I LOVE it :D

Upgrade to a D3....definately. Don't get me wrong I love my D2, but it was definately a down grade from the D3. Out of the box the D3 leaves an out of the box D2 for dead. I know, I had my D3 for 2 years and took it into all terrains that people thought I was nuts to do so and that was with less than average tyre options. A modded D3 against a modded D2, the comparison would be even stevens.

We also seem to forget that if you look at say D2's....they were an expensive propostion new. Hell, I have the base model 03 S, that was $60 odd k new, SE and HSE,s you were looking at up to $80 odd k. A 20 yr old rangie....new....was an expensive proposition when new.

We also seem to forget that LR's are a prestige vehicle, just because it has 10 yrs on the clock and has been modified to hoo haa, it started out as a prestige vehicle if you look at Rangies and Disco's. Even a new fender is $50k+. How many that own a D1 or D2 when brand spanking new or even a couple of years old, would give it the curry that many now get....not many. I was throwing a $100k+ vehicle up and down all sorts of tracks, but some not at all...........because it was a $100k+ car.............not a $10-20k vehicle. Time will tell on the "electrics" that so many talk about, but that aside, I felt more comfortable with taking my stock D3 off road than my stock D2 in so many ways.

Was my HSE exceptional value, compared to the competition, hell yes. Did I love the depreciation when I sold it........hell no. The person who bought it for $60k at 2 years old...exceptional value....bloody oath...bastard :). The main problem with the D3 that I found was simply tyre choice and at the time options for it. That is now a thing of the past as you can mod a D3, just like you can mod any other LR. Of course you are not going to see that bar a few ( like on this forum) for probably another 4-5 odd years. Most disco's I have seen on this forum are predominately D1's or early D2's, not late D2's or D3's.......why? Because most people arent going to take a $30-$40k +++++ vehicle and take it off road for medium to hardcore off roading....bar a few.

As said earlier, I love my D2 and I cannot wait to mod it, but comparing a D2 to a D3 if you look purely at its off road and on road capabilities......is chalk and cheese,
