Thread: Help to kill a varmint

Nope - Trap is set right at the entrance/exit. To get in or out they HAVE to walk over it, and..... nothing for 2 nights.

They must have a fair old stash of dog food in there, as it looks like they don't come out a lot.

when we were young fellas we'd put a ferret into the burrows and net the exit holes, catching the rabbits that came out.....if that traps not working you might have to flush it out....whether it be exhaust fumes, smoke or ferret.

I had a plague of BIG HAIRY BUSH RATS a while ago. Bought some TOM CAT blocks and anchored with wire as the rats would take them away. Went down one morning to reapply new blocks and the rotten coots had eaten through the plastic lid of the container and demolished my whole supply!!! They just love them

So has anyone else in the area got a similar problem?

And do you still have the problem? What was it/is it?

Today's effort has been to put down a hose (after blocking off the other exists) and leave the tap turned on low-ish for 2 or 3 hours.

I have probably pumped several hundred litres into this hole and no sign of it overflowing, so now I am really worried about the size of the cavern under my tank. It's not as though the soil is dry, as we have had 3 or 4 days of fairly constant rain.

Just going outside to check again......

I would suspect the rats are sitting above the line the water is taking, they would have bolted out by now if not.

now that you have wet the area under the tanks, it is the best time to try gas type tablets (phostoxin etc) they work far better when there is moist soil to trigger them.

The traps are only likley to work if left in place for an extended period of time, rats are very wary compared to mice etc, and the setting of traps and the addition of anything new makes them very cautiouse.

I would cover over all the exit holes and see which ones are opened in the morning or the next day, I would then carefully place wax poison blocks (ratsak etc) down into the holes and cover them over again. The rats should eventuually eat the bait as they have to get by the bait to open up again.

Be carefull with the dogs, the rats may throw the baits out to begin with!
