Thread: Road Rage, who gets it?

You know, these "licence off the back of a cornflakes packet" stories are not something that only happened in the olden days, and their practice certainly hasn't been consigned to the history books.

I know a person who was told during his driving test that as time was running short there would be no parking test, and the entire examination lasted 9 minutes. This was 2007.

Although the new improved Vic Roads test should prevent this from happening in the future.

agreed on the wheatbix packet liscence...

I know of some one that was going to pass after they scraped bits half off of one of my rovers..........

What signs are you referring to - we don't have them in QLD?

The QLD drivers guide doesn't actually make any reference to this particular scenario other than the blanket statement that you are permitted to overtake when there is a broken line on your side.

"You are allowed to cross a dividing line that has

overtake a vehicle, to do a U-turn or to enter or

leave a road"

"You may overtake a vehicle only if you have a clear view of any

approaching traffic and you can do it safely"

The loophole is that it doesn't expressly forbid you to overtake if there is any approaching traffic!

It follows that since there is also a "keep left unless overtaking" rule that any traffic in the oncoming far left lane cannot move into the centre lane unless overtaking. It then comes down to your own judgement regarding whether anyone in the oncoming left hand lane is going to make an overtaking manoeuvre and therefore whether it is "safe" to overtake.

Further to my last post - I just checked the "Australian Road Rules" which is referred to from the South Australian dept of transport...

"A driver must not overtake a vehicle unless:
(a) the driver has a clear view of any approaching traffic; and

(b) the driver can safely overtake the vehicle."

Again there is no restriction which forbids you to overtake if there is any approaching traffic. Obviously a "no overtaking" type sign would override this, but I've never seen any. When it is actually forbidden to overtake then they just paint a double white or unbroken centre line.

I'm now really curious to know if there is anywhere that this practice is actually illegal. I still don't think it is but am keen to know otherwise...

i believe tombie is referring to an earlier post which said that it is ok to pass someone in the CENTRE lane, even if there is a car in the far right lane. this stuation is when the oncoming traffic is utilising an overtaking lane, while you are in a single lane. here in SA every one of these overtaking lanes has a big sign saying "no overtaking unless BOTH lanes are clear" for the cars in the single lane. on a regular 2 way road, yes, you can pass when safe to do so, when your lane has a broken line. single and double unbroken lines, and you cant pass.

Yep, that's what I was referring to also - so SA must be a bit different. Without a sign such as the one you are referring to the general condition is that it IS OK to utilise the centre lane to overtake from the single lane side, evn if there are cars in the far right lane as long you "can do it safely".

Saw something today that would usually fire me up but today it didn't.

P plater turning right across the intersection in front of me. He was driving one handed, looking down at his phone and obviously texting or dialing but not really paying attention.

Flash, Flash! He'd just driven through a red light camera - don't think he'd even realised.

Geez I chuckled.

Chuckled? I would have peed myself!

Dunno why talking or texting on a mobile has been banned. So many people do it that it must be impossible to police or it just isn't policed. (I have a hands-free kit and I don't like it that much as it's still distracting.)
