    Not a happy bunny!

Am a distinctly unhappy bunny. As part of the TLC given to the 110 in Cairns the garage send rear prop shaft (rear tail shaft in Aussie??) to have new UJ's and yokes fitted out to a specialist firm.

Guess what?? Less then a 1,000 km later when I was 50 km west of Croydon I started getting noises. Road surface noise due to change of road surface? tyre going down? Nope Another 2 km checked front prop. Nope Gear lever juddered check engine mountings etc Another 2km a big bang and rear UJ yoke split. No cup on one side.

OK unload rear of 110 to get spare prop shaft out. Did any of the Jap 4 x4 drivers stop? Nope they were too busy towing their trailers etc. Farmer come out of his paddock about a 100 metres away and checked that I was OK as I was bolting up the spare prop shaft.

Now my problem is to locate a replacement yoke. Mount Isa, Burketown, Kathrine or Darwin???

IF I was heading back towards Cairns I would stick the rear prop somewhere the sun does not shine in the sunshine state.

I reckon the retaining circlip had not been located correctly.

Any other reason why a brand new UJ yoke should fail so quickly?

How can prop shaft UJs be checked on the vehicle?

    Regards

    Brendan

I think you were unlucky there. May have been install problem if things went wrong on them but hard to say. Well done on having a spare.
With my experience around machinery there is no way of predicting a failure other than obvious.
I use a stethoscope, UV Heat sensor and dial guage here and you can only pick a few. Even putting new in some times can fail before old.
Don't be to hard on the last one who did the work as they may not have been the cause. Tony

Stick the car on a level surface ... in neutral .. Hand brake off ..
Lay on ya back under car & Grab and shake the uni as your pushing the car forward with your spare foot on the chassie (or the tyre) .... As the uni is turning .. you should feel any offending play

Also buy a pocket size grease gun and give it a lube while your under there .. as you need to turn the shaft to get the grease nipples in the right spot

Good opportunity to get the missus involved

I would call that the obvious If things are lose... well they may need help soon. I like the idea of the missus involved.
I think in his case you may not pick it as was new. I just can happen other than humans

antoher cause is ecentricing of the cap recievers in the shaft... if youve abused it and the old uj has "settled" it will probabley last for ever, then when you put a new one in they dont fit "quite right" and when put under stress give out a bit and then they eat themselves... Very hard to spot, I dont know too many people who take to the shaft with a set of bore gauges to check the Uj for out of round recivers. hell Ive only ever done it once and that was because I had a UJ fail a bearing at less than 2000Km.

    Brendan,

I have a 110 yoke here if you need one, (The shaft that belonged to it is bent...) it has your name written all over it! Let me know how I can get it to you?
By yoke, do you mean the rear one of the shaft at the differential end?

Bren has microcat on the toughbook but he might need to phone IT support before he can get it to work.
And if he phones me at 3 in the morning he won't be the only one that is not a happy bunny

As for getting the missus involved, I don't reckon I would be any use whatsoever at this distance, my use will probably be as a parts delivery girl when I see him in Singapore in October.

Since Darwin was on the itinerary it looks like I will have to wait unyil I get there.

The UJs AND Yokes were replaced in Cairns and had done less then 1000 km. All of which had been on the bitumen.

Must admit I will feel happier when I have managed to replace it. It is a good job I come out with a set of spare props. In my experience the yoke goes so next time I will also travel with a spare set of yokes.

    Regards

    Brendan
