I'm actually kitchen designer. The company I work for won't fit them at all.
They were talking of banning them here too, but I don't know if they did.
Just like we refuse to fit a microwave behind a door, or build a fridge in that's not intended to be installed that way.
There ar a whole bunch of things that may not necessarily be banned or against the building code, but generally are not done for various reasons.

The best use I have seen for one of these was someone who diverted it into a worm farm!
The worms love all that ground up matter - meat too.
Turned it into yummy worm castings in a day or too!

weve got one......it was here when we bought the house......
the missus uses it all the time for all the waste from mainly salads......
all the peels......
stuff that falls in the sink during food preparation....such as potato peels etc.....
most of our foodscraps go in the bin.......
if it starts to smell........just turn it on.....and pour a bowl of hot water and vinegar into it.......
i always pour the left over salad dressing in it as well......whch is balsamic vinegar.....and i dont get any smells......
another bonus for a garbage disposal.......is if you ever get a blocked drain and the sink fills up.......
just block the hole on the next sink...(if you have a double sink....) and switch it on.......
it works a heap better than a plunger......and its a lot less effort......
only problem is......when something is so simple......it wont block......
it only ever happened to me once.......and i been waiting for it to happen again......but it wont.....
because its so easy to unblock......go figure.....
