    salisbury rear disc brakes

    Hello all

once again I need to ask the experts! Can I use any of the parts from a 1995 discovery rear diff to change my current salisbury rear diff drum brake setup into a disc brake setup The salisbury diff is in my 1991 Military 130 ambulance/camper. I can get a complete 1995 disco rear diff for cheap from a wreaker but they don't come up in wreakers here in Canada very often. So I want to jump on it if I can use the parts. Any explanations on how to do it and what parts can interchange would be great.

    Regards
    Justin

It is possible to do a bolt on coversion and there are several ways of doing it.

You need to buy or make the caliper bracket and use the right combination of hubs, rotors and calipers, depending on how thick the caliper bracket is.

Keith at Rovertracks (USA) sells machined caliper brackets and will be able to advise you if they will suit the disco parts. However, I personally would not use disco or range rover rear calipers on a 110 or 130 for the reason that the drum brakes have more braking capacity (according to maxidrive) even though the discs may 'feel' better due to the higher and harder pedal which is a characteristic of disc brakes.

110/130 calipers are much bigger than rangie/disco calipers and the rotors are also thicker to cope with the heat - this would be the best way to go, especially for an ambulance.....

Theres been at least one previous thread on this with more specific information.

We are about to do the conversion by puting a whole defender rear end init and when we ordered the discs, hubs etc they were the disco brakes that fitted the diff so you should beable to do it

    Justin,

To fit rear discs from a later defender to an early drum brake salisbury, it's easier to use the stub axles, hubs/rotors, axles/ flanges and calipers/ brackets from the 1994/95 onwards (MA) defender.
The discovery FRONT solid disc rotors are the same as REAR defender rotors. Rear Disco stubs won't bolt up to a Sals flange AFAIK, but having never TRIED it I could be wrong.

Also, I would recommend fitting the booster, master cyl and pedal box from the defender aswell, as this gives by far the best braking perfomance.

I will add that the drum brakes, when adjusted correctly and in good condition will stop quite well, though suffer from overheating more and water etc makes them useless.

And sorry about the engine bits, haven't been able to track some down but Balki is onto something I think. (He was one of the people I was going to ask anyway! Didn't realise he was already a member here either must be getting)

    G'day Justin,

As the guys have mentioned, the conversion process involves a bit of stuffing around (what's new, it's a LR).... and the rear drums shouldn't have any problem dealing with the weight, so I thought if you're concerned about slowing when it's all loaded with gear on a trip then you might consider an exhaust brake set up. It was discussed in the 'Isuzu' section of this forum and Murray posted a photo of the components from an NPR truck (4BD1T). There might be further info on the 'Isuzu' parts of www.4btswaps.com.

Anyway, good luck with it, the 130 looks like a great unit for touring.

    Matt.

My County was converted by the previous owner. He said he used a "factory conversion kit". Maybe these kits are still available.

I know its not exactly on track but comparing disco/RR to defender rear ends.

I have an early sals that has been disc converted swinging in the shed at the moment.
It uses RR/disco stubs and rear calipers.

The biggest difference between it and my MA 1995 sals on the 130 that I can see is the RR/disco stub axle is attached with six M8 - 8.8 bolts whilst the 130 uses M10 bolts to attach the stubs. I wont be using the modded sals (with maxi flange) due to this load rating issue IMHO and instead will fab up an actuator bracket for my existing housing.

I guess in your case Justin, if you wanted rear discs, you could change the drum backing plate bracket to take the disco calipers and use then work out the clearances with the disco rotor/hub on the 130 stub... but rear disco brakes are pretty tiny? Disco twin pot fronts would be a better conversion one would think.

Go the exhaust brake, A long decline with DUGDUGDUGDUGDUGDUGGGGGH would be cool in a 130.
