Why you shouldn't venture too far off road by yourself

    From the NSW Police site:

Police to resume search for two men stranded in bushland – Oberon

    Tuesday, 16 Sep 2008 05:25am

Police in the state’s Central West will resume their search this morning for two men stranded in bushland after their four-wheel-drive became bogged.

The men, aged 28 and 37, contacted ‘Triple 0’ just before 4pm yesterday (Monday 15 September) to advise their silver-coloured Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive had become stuck in the Hampton State Forest, near Oberon.

Based on Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates provided by the men, police from Chifley Local Area Command searched bushland near Wicketty War Creek.

However, due to the poor state of local tracks after two days of heavy rain, and fading light, police were prevented from continuing into the forest.

About 8pm, a second unsuccessful attempt was made to locate the stranded pair via another access route.

Police and State Emergency Service volunteers expect to resume their search at first light today.

Police have remained in contact with the men by mobile phone throughout the night.

They are said to be in good spirits and have plenty of supplies with them.

    I wonder if they're out yet ?
Anyone know where Wicketty War Creek is?

Perhaps not so much that they should not have been by themselves as maybe they should have read the weather advisory.

But you should not pass judgement on them without knowing the circumstances - they may have been locals going home by their usual route and simply did not exercise good judgement in dealing with the weather.

Found it. It's just west of Hampton.
Why couldn't they just walk out instead of wasting all these resources?

I agree, when you're in the middle of nowhere.

However, the area is only a max of 4km from the township of Hampton.
    They have a GPS too.

Let me get this straight; two grown men go into the bush in a 4 wheel drive and get themselves bogged. They've got plenty of food and water, they are unharmed, but they have the ultimate piece of recovery equipment- a (drumroll) MOBILE PHONE! So our heroes want someone to come and get them at the expense of the taxpayer (me). What's wrong with this picture? Oh, just noticed they are in a Hilux.
Put the rescue and recovery in the hands of a private contractor, payment up front.
