Spring=snakes

I have absolutely no idea. I love all other animals (including lizards, crocs, even used to collect them & spiders etc). But even as a child, the mere picture of a snake would make me near on faint!

When I was 18 I moved to the UK to live for a number of years & worked in a restaurant my mother & brother owned. There was this ghastly sleazy man who owned a night club above the restaurant & one night after the dinner crowd, we were invited to a party of his at the nightclub. (I couldn't stand this man).

Anyway, at the "party" the sleazeball had a very large snake, some sort of python, which he was carrying around showing off to everyone. He knew I didn't like him, & had tried a number of times to be, shall we say, rather intimidating and influencial, to which I hated him even more.

So at the party, he beelines for me with the damn snake. I had a fair on fit. But because I didn't want this sleaze ball to have the better of me & enjoy my fear, I somehow managed to turn the situation.

So as he started to walk towards me, I confidently marched up to him with the snake & started stroking the snake & made out like I wasn't the least bit afraid of it.

I was surprised it felt so warm & soft & smooth.

The moment only lasted a couple of minutes, after which I was extremely relieved, as it seemed more like hours.

Since then, no, I still can't stand snakes ...

ps I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but as a small child I lived in the bush in Africa & one of my first memories is of my older brother swimming in the pool in which there was a snake (don't remember how it got there etc). But I remember the ensuing panic in getting him out of the pool away from the snake...

Oh & did I mention my ex husband became a herpatologist

Tony! I never knew you had a hubby! Did he become interested in snakes before or after he found out you didn't like them?

We have a 'resident' red-bellied black snake which has been living down by our creek for a few years now. She's a magnificent specimen, and as long as she stays where she is, that's fine by us, as the creek is about 500 meters from our house. Where we live was once a farming area, but over the years suburbia has been slowly creeping in and I guess the wildlife are finding less and less places to exist. We do get the occasional snake close to the house, and that worries us with our dog, as I'm sure he'd have a go at one (he's a Staffy!), so we just keep an eye open, and listen to the birds - they go crazy when they see a snake.

Our daughter, who lives in the Top End, told me yesterday that the large green tree frogs are starting to appear in her garden, a sign of the approaching Wet I suppose. We used to get those here as well, years ago, but sadly not any more. When the kids were little, they used to take great delight in feeding Christmas beetles to the big green tree frogs.

Well we have them all here, the Illawarra Escarpement is known for Tiger and brown snakes and there are also Red belly blacks too, we see a brown snake on one of our walks near the creek nearby, it's not fussed when we walk by.

We also have a resident Python who comes around from time to time, he/she loves our next door neighbours laundry

Tiger snakes are all weather snakes, so they are spotted year round

Haven't seen any snakes this year - still a bit cold here. Actually only seen a couple round the house since I've been here, the last one on the verandah when I had the grandkids here about two years ago. It had an unfortunate accident.

Just returned from 10 days down South so haven't seen anyn yet. I won't be at all surprised if I see some in the next few days before I return to work. Its been a bit cold and wet around here so I've been told so that might slow them down.

I'll post the one I see.

Don't the Tiger snakes hibernate through winter?

Had a brown snake buy my fish pond about 2 weeks ago. Another lady at work saw a brown snake in her yard last week.
Every year I have found a snake skin buy our decking around the pool, buy the looks of it it is a fairly large brown snake.
We live in rural area, beside an orchard and a channel on the other side of the road, so we tend to get a few browns passing through, especially since it has been so dry around the area in the past few years.

Yes they do, i just read a profile on them, i must be thinking of another snake sorry my bad, there a Sydney snake that is active in winter, it also mates in winter, but the name escapes me now.
