Thread: I know I'm lucky, But this is pushing it!

Had a bit of a near miss today.

You see Wednesday is my day to do the grocery shopping. I normally do it straight after dropping the kids to school, but today I was sidetracked by a little 109 in the driveway. After giving it a wash, I headed off to the shops around lunch time.

Shopping done, I returned home to bring it all up stairs. I normally leave it on the floor, for Wifey to put away, as she likes to see what I bought and she knows where things go. Apparently my shove and shut method is not acceptable. Recently I have been asked to put it on the bench instead, so I did, well sort of.

Wifey finishes work in time to swing by my work to say hello, before going to pick up the kids from school. Today, I was running late and we had a quick rendevouz on the side of the road where we crossed. Now it's 15 minutes from home to work, and about the same from there to school, and then another 5 home. so it has been about 35 minutes since I left home.

Cheryl and the kids arrive home and start to smell something funny as soon as they get in the front gate. Up the stairs and open the front door and it intensifies. They run to the kitchen to find the groceries smouldering on the bench, with smoke pouring off the plastic, the chocolate coated peanuts melted everywhere and the pita breads smoking.

It seems when putting the groceries on the bench and the ceran cooktop I inadvertantly bumped the switch for the main element on low. Now luckily or not, there was a glass cutting board covering the element, which did sort of insulate things for a while, but enough for me to not notice before I left for work. Also luckily cheryl came straight home instead of heading out to the shops as she had planned.

I will put this down to a pretty close call. You can bring home all sorts of finds, clutter up the yard, forget things, annoy them when you are drunk, fart, burp, even pick and flick, and somehow they still love you. But I think burning the house down would be a deal breaker.

As I said in the title. I know I'm pretty lucky. But this is really pushing things a bit. Don't you think.

Due to plastic and smoke damage I couldn't touch ny books for a week. Insurance insisted that we leave everything till it was assessed and cleaned. Luckily a freind at the war memorial took on the job of cleaning photos and paintings.
