Actually it was my mate who is doing all the mechanical work.

are the Isuzu 3.6 and 3.9 really the same sized block? the engines are of similar design, but i am led to believe they don't share any parts of the same dimensions.

That sounds right and wrong all at the same time, it depends which experts you speak to from Isuzu.

We called several suppliers and they do not all say the same.
Some/ most say same block and interchangeable parts and others say definately not.

Bit like the old days at Leyland really!!!

I don't know about internal parts, but the bell housing I bought second hand was previously fitted to a 3.6, now it's on my 4BD1T.

Off Topic Question:

What are you doing with the old 2.4 VM?

Iam one of those sickos that have a VM in my old girl, and due to the fact that they keep breaking I have started a nice little collection of spares.

P.S.
The reason I have not relented and swapped the motor out (my preference would be a Perkins 4.182 aka Mazda HA), is because I am stubborn and refuse to let the car win, there is probably a bit of stupidity mixed in there as well.

Sold it some time ago to another member here.
We also had a spare motor with heaps of new stuff on it.
We just could not get the thing to work properly.

It should have stayed as a stationary motor or boat motor or even anchor.(kidding)

They had great idea with individual heads etc but just different metals do differnet things.

They are from the same family but not the same block. The 4BB1 (cc 1973>) shares bearings with the 4BA1, 4BC1, 4BC2 and 4BE1 over a cetain year range. There is 3 different sets of main bearings with this model depending on lug size and journal size. Main journal tunnel size is the same.
The 4BD1 has same bore size but different stroke hence crank, rods pistons, b/end shells etc all different.
