G'day Glen82
I think a few people misunderstood what you posted about your problem, the "Rear End Bearing" would refer to the rear axle bearings, or rear axle assembly (rear end) what you are refering to is/was the " Rear Engine Bearing" commonly called "the Rear Main Bearing &/or "Rear Main Seal" this problem would require the removal of the transmission or motor and removing the the sump and crankshaft, after disconnecting the conrods and accessories, so the labour charges would be about right, as it entails a fair amount of work, the cheap part is the rear bearing& seal, this is one of the more expensive repairs on a motor as it requires a large amount of labour, and could well be the reason the previous owner sold the vehicle, after he got a repair quote, I have seen this happen lots of times while I worked in the motor trade, "uneconomical repair to value of car, flogg it off"
It might be worth seeing if somebody on this site would be willing to assist you in doing a home repair job that might save a large amount of labour, like removing the motor at home.
cheers
