    Cool Camel Trophy Disco

Just cruising through Karridale north of Augusta in southwestern WA and was jolted out of my wine-tasting-mission mode by the sight of a sad looking Camel Trophy Disco outside a shed! I stopped and had a chat to the owner, who was using it for a bush hack/daily runner from what I could tell! It was licenced, but in poor shape - I'll try to post some pics. Apparently it's the Swiss team one from '93. Was "converted" from left hand drive - you can tell by the big hole in the passenger dash , and the handbrake on the wrong side. The owner took off the bumper for some reason but the winch and roof rack with its placard are still attached. I think looking at my pics it has perhaps an internal roll cage? I didn't notice at the time I took them! Of the radios present I'm not sure what's original either.
Bloke says he'd sell it "for the right price". I think it would be an easy restoration on first glance. I was tempted to add it to my Lightweight, Austin Champ wrecks and rusted out Alfetta, so didn't ask! Any ideas what one would be worth? He reckons it's only gone 140,000 (didn't think but I guess it's metric - km) but I wondered later if the conversion had given it a new odometer.

could be a neew oddo, but the camel trophy vehicles had hard lives.

they did have an internal rool cage.

as for price, that's always hard, if it's as poor a condition as you say it would only be worth a couple of thousand dollars at max, but his comment about the right price souns to me like a line i've heard before when somebody has something that they percieve is rare and valuable, and they should be paid tens of thousands for a vehicle they have nearly destroyed.

I'd like to be proved wrong though.

That Disco was in the Mayalisa event, how the hell did it get here.
Price, well mint ones in the uk can go for as much as 40 50 dollar.

Again these are ones that have been restored to full Camel spec.
For starters its been converted to right hand drive, so that knocks the price down a fair bit, the bits bolted on to it are worth something, as no one makes them anymore. hard to say without pictures etc etc, maybe 10k??

Just one of the many rolls and bumps on the Borneo trip.

Valuing the Camels can be quite difficult as it's going to come down to how much you want to pay for the 'history'.

Firstly, you need to find out if it's a genuine vehicle and from your description it may well be. If you can get me the VIN number (PM me) I should be able to find out if it's genuine or not.

As far as restoration goes, well, there's so many different ideas and approaches ranging from wanting to restore it to 'concourse' condition through to just restoring it to being a 'practical classic'. (I personally prefer the pragmatic, practical classic approach)

Over here, the CT Discos tend not to be as sought after as the 110s and as such, they tend not to sell for as much as the owners would like to think they're worth. There's a number of reasons for this...

    1. The CT Disco is more common than the 110.
    2. The CT Disco is very heavy (with all the extra equipment) so it's cumbersome for use as an off-road toy.
    3. The boot is small... So it's not as much use as the 110 as an expedition vehicle either.

However, they are interesting and a major part of the Land Rover history.

OK... So how would I tell if it were genuine?

    Well, the main pointers are:

    • Internal roll cage.
    • Roof rack. However, these are special as they bolt directly through the roof and into the roll cage.
    • Under body protection. (Fuel tank and steering)
    • Heavy duty bull bar.
    • Superwinch Husky mounted on the front (between chassis legs IIRC).
    • Heavy duty rear springs (Coil & helper).
    • 2x 3.5t pins on the front & 1x 5t pin on the rear.

There's plenty of other stuff that they fitted as event equipment but that's a starter.

BTW - If you are wanting to restore the vehicle, there is still plenty of kit available but there are other bits which are now obsolete.

Damage! Now, on the events, all the cars took a pounding and depending on the event as to the typical damage they would have sustained. However, the main problems with the Discos are:

    • Rotting - Floor, chassis, roof, etc...
    • Cracked bulkheads!
    • Bent rear crossmember & chassis. (For a while, they thought the rear doors were bending the hinges and dropping onto the rear bumper... It was actually the rear chassis being bent up!!)
    • Serious chassis/panel damage.
    • Abused drive train!
    • Seized fuel injector pump.
    • Mud EVERYWHERE.... & I mean EVERYWHERE!

This is over and above all of the regular problems with the early Discos.

Other than that, they're a great car.

    Any questions, let me know...

The other thing it's got going for it is that it's probably one of the only CT vehicles in Australia...
