D2 with BUSTED rear diff!

I spoke to a backyarder here who dismantles series 1 Disco's. He has Series 1 diffs with 24 spline that he says fit up to 02 for $150.00. He's in Seaford.
But not 4.11.( I assume 3.54 is standard). You might need to go to Jacmac for the c/w & pinion, or wherever you sourced them yourself.

I dont have CDL...I just did a great Fraser trip with traction control only, but in time CDL might have to sneak back in (albeit expensive because I need output housing etc) just for this sort of reason.

Yep, I totally killed my diff centre whilst on a trip. it broke at 113,000 km, newer towed a caravan, oils changed every 50k. I limped back to civilisation only because a CDL was fitted. Diff lapping repairer advised this was caused by excessive wheel spin on any one side of the diff, it can happen to any standard diff. Anyway, fitted a no-spin Detroit locker and it's a far more capable vehicle now. Worth the money!

Yep. 285/75-16, I was driving on a mission, on shale, on a steep hill up a step (almost) without having aired down. :(

Fortunately it's just the diff center that goes kaboom and not the CW&P gears like the 120 Series Prado.

My diff center went gradually due to excessive wheel spinning. It didn't go bang but the diff oil started to show signs of metal shavings. One day, whilst driving on a bitumen, I had to do a U turn, and there was a loud bang. But the Disco kept going - it was the planetary gears jumping a cog.

After a number of such cog jumping incidences, I got the diffs pulled before I got stranded. The spider gears were all very average looking. I must have been lucky that I could even still drive the vehicle without a pin flying out and punching a hole through the diff housing, which can and does happen.

All is good (and stronger) now with an ARB diff lock.
I ended up replacing the half shafts as well for added "safety margin" :angel:

Well, I got the old girl back. Unfortunately the crown gear and pinion were shot to bits too, mainly because I had to drive so far to get home I think. That meant that the $$ didn't stretch to the locker right now. Second hand diff (only got 5,000km on it) all fitted for $900. The locker will still go in, just be in Feb/Mar 09 before our big NT trip:D
