    Books Books and more Books

    Hi all

Apart from being a Landy fan and 4wder, I am also an avid reader.

During a recent browse through one of our local second hand shops I came across two interesting Land Rover oriented books:

    1. Where Dead Men Lie
The Leyland brothers trip from the West Coast through the Red Centre to Byron Bay in 196?. First time ever this trio was made by an automobile. Great pictures of the two red Landies doing what Landies do. And the text is pretty intersting reading too. Just have to ignore some of the tongue in cheek stigma attached to the Leyland Bros by comedians etc.
    2 Red Rover
Mike Steel recounts his escapades running a Land Rover tour company in the deserts of Western Australia during the late sixties, early seventies.

There was a second copy of the Leyland Bros book at the shop (Hardcover 1st edition <I think> in very reasonable nick. $35.00 if anyones interested let me know)

I also recently found (at a L/R dealer) the book comemorating 50 years of L/R (it must've been on their shelves for ten years!!!) Also a great read, I may have to find a 60th Anniversary one too.

It got me thinking if anyone else out there has some good recommendations of good books that encompass our interest in Land Rovers (other than workshop manuals etc) I'm guessing some of the Camel Cup publications would be interesting reading.

Post anything interesting up here for us all to see/comment.

    Cheers
    Jason

We have two of the "Bush Tucker Man" Les Hiddins' books:
"Explore Wild Australia" and "Stories of Exploration & Survival" and both incorporate Landrovers.

Also Len Beadell's series of books have lots of photos of Landrovers. These make an interesting read, if you haven't already read them.

I have both those books and yes they are a good read.

Mike Steel's "Red Rover" recounts his travels around South Australia, as he was the owner/operator of the Innamincka Trading Post in those days.

    Jason,

I read the Leyland's book 'Where Dead Men Lie' a year or two ago after picking it up in an Op Shop, recently found 'Red Rover' in another Op Shop.
One I've had for a while but haven't got round to reading yet is 'Four-Wheel Drive Swagman' by Jeff Carter (Series 2 LWB on the cover). SWMBO got me 'Land Rover the Incomparable 4x4 from Series 1 to Defender' earlier in the year which is mainly b&w photos but still very interesting to browse through.

A DVD of the original West East crossing film was on sale last year titled 'Wheels Across A Wilderness' along with 'A Journey Revisited' where a team recently retraced the Journey with Mike Leyland. Great viewing although I must admit I got bored with the Journey Revisited.

Some of the books (especially ones with Pics) from the snowy Hydro have some great shots of Landrovers doing amazing things. I bought a coffee table type book at Cabramurra when I was up there and it is well worth a flick through.

My other half found "First Overland: London-Singapore by Land Rover" by Tim Slessor in a second hand bookstore not long ago. It was originally published in the mid 1950's and is a great read.

We also have several Land Rover books covering the history of the company and all the different vehicles.

They make an interesting read even if you have already read them....read and re-read, you'll find more each time.

    Found another intersting one:

    Half Safe
    by Ben Carlin

Its about crossing the Atlantic by Jeep (seriously)
Author bought an ex army amphibious Jeep (not a DUKW) and built a cabin etc on it and sailed from USA to Africa, then drove up to his home town in Birmingham. He had to be rescued by a tanker about 500mls out in his frist attempt but re-equipped the jeep and tried again this time successfully

It makes me think that the current idea of "adventure" has to include a plugged in fridge and an airconditioner, seems like we might be missing the point sometimes!!

    Cheers
    Jason
