Update on dead disco.
Firstly many thank to those who offered assistance on the site, greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Psimpson7 who came around with his Nanacom and also offered assistance.
One of the symptoms noted was a struggling battery which sounded as though it was about to give up the ghost any second. (Had it checked and it passed the test perfectly).This tended to sidetrack lines of thought away from switch malfunctions to along 'a lack of electricity' line .
Eventually this afternoon we took off the serpentine belt and hit the starter and its running perfectly.
Cause of all the problem, one seized idler pully. No tell tale warning noises noted.
Perhaps had I not had this 'anti computerised engines' thing fixed firmly in my head, I would have found that on the first day by a simple mechanical process of elimination, who knows. Perhaps there is a lesson there for us all.
At least I have got my moneys worth out of Daisy, the reliable old 2a.

Any thoughts as to why it stopped in the first place?
When the event occurred, firstly, the vehicle was not under throttle, rather, throttled right off as I was entering a built up area, and secondly Hyacinth is an automatic so there is no actual solid mechanical link between the wheels back to the motor to keep it running. The seizing of the pulley under these circumstances was enough to stall the engine (and also disable my power steering) by simply stopping the serpentine belt and consequently the crankshaft.
I just dont quite understand why I didnt hear it beforehand.

I suspect that you may have intermittently heard the pulley bearing if you were standing outside the car with it running, but that's a little hard to do when your driving. I had both the idler and tensioner pulleys start to squeak on my D2 and the annoying thing was they only did this at idle and not all the time. Also the other thing was I replaced the tensioner pulley because it felt like a worn bearing and the idler didn't. Problem went away for about 3 weeks then the idler pulley went down the same path.
Perhaps the reason for not starting was that the crankshaft was turning so slowly that the signal generated by the crankshaft position sensor was too weak to be recongnised by the ecu. From the WSM, the sensor generates 2 - 3 volts at cranking speeds and 6-6.5 from 1000 rpm onwards, so at significantly slower than normal cranking speeds the generated voltage could easily be too low to be accepted by the ecm.
