    solar panel

I run a Waeco 60L fridge on a Remco 100amp hour auxilliary battery (and Redarc isolator) in my defender. The fridge is fine for a couple of days without driving to recharge the battery but with summer coming on I want to be able to trickle charge the battery with a solar panel whilst I'm stationary. Can someone point me in the direction of what size (watts) panel I'd need? Cheers, Scoota

Do a search on this site - I seem to remember a long discussion on this a while back.

70watts ish should be about the mark

thats what Im using and it works well enough to keep the fridge going for about double what youd normally get out of the battery on the fridge alone + some lights time.

    Hey scoota,

I run a CF50 Waeco, two versalite fluros and a 12volt shower. My second battery is only 50 amp and I run a 80 watt BP solar panel with a Sun keeper 6 controller. I have run this for 10 days in summer without a problem so far and most of that was the car just sitting doing nothing. So as Blknight has said anything from 70 watts up would be ok but wouldn't go below that.

    G'day,
I run a Waeco CF50 (with a Two Zone on top now and then), I have a 80 Panel mounted permanently on my roof and my CF50 runs continually with about 1 hr of driving a day !
With solar panel you need to at least put double the amount of amps per hour in as to what your using !, A CF50/60 will use roughly in standard ambient temperatures 2-3 amps per hour and in good sun a 80 watt panel will put in 4 amps per hour ! this helps get you though the not so good periods of sun during the day and Night time. Its not a bullet proof system as you can not always rely on the sun but your better to overkill the situation if possible !

I run a independent vehicle charge system with a 50 amp hour AGM battery, which lacks in amp hours but I gain an extremely quick charging ability ! Both from vehicle and solar ! (its great to have all the amp hours but it comes almost imposable to re-charge effectively !)

    Cheers

Sadly 80W was never enough for me for extended camping in SEQ during summer. My maths said 100W.

Now have 145W which is overkill, but the extra 65W panel i bought was dirt cheap

    More is allways better !!

But I also should have added to really know and understand what size panels you need you need to measure the current draw of all your 12 Volt accessories !

    Cheers

There's just so many variables using solar panels as a charging source, and compressor fridges as loads.
I'd say start with an 80 Watt panel and see how it goes.
