The only thing bad about them is they are noisy as hell. I have been kept awake by the noise of these diesel generators many times. Not the thing to use in a public campground.

Loud as buggery, the might last long but if used at a camp site you might find it having an early retirement (sabotage). From memory the VW one was only slightly noisier and it was 4 cylinders.

Easy to start, and only stopped for fuel are the good points I can remember.

intention is to find one at a reasonable price to strip to be used for the generator part of it only..... the motor will be redundant with the generator driven from another source

These are a great genset. Always start, you won't pull your shoulder out like the old 2.5kva or have to crank it like the 10kva with the VW motor. From memory it should have connections for electric start too.

Too noisy for a civy campsite, but if you can dig a hole and dig the genset in, you can make it surprisingly quite. See if it comes with a length of flexible steel hose for routing the exhaust away.

And you can sleep near them. What wakes you up is when it stops and you know it's out of fuel.

If it is not marked/tagged as unserviceable, it should be fine, probably having been serviced before going into stores. As said previously, it may have it's maint log with it.

Let us know how much you pay.

A guy in Toowoomba was selling one on ebay. I rang him and it turned out he had 3 for sale - he bought a pallet at an army disposal auction. The ebay auction didnt even get a bid.

As it turns out, I didnt end up buying one from him, my liquidity has diminished somewhat lately
