ADF members - anyone familiar with these Gensets?

I'm looking at buying one of these diesel gensets - used EX ADF.

    Advanced Power - Military Range

Has anyone had any experiences using them?
I'd be keen to hear comments on reliability, ease of starting and any other general comments. The one I'm looking at has done 330 hrs which doesnt seem like a huge amount for a Yanmar diesel. The other question is, is it normal for the ADF to dispose of this type of equipment with relatively little use?

    Thanks

i have not had much to do with them yet, will be playing with two of them next week on a ex

ours have never been in for maintenance therefore i say they must be alright, in saying that elecy's service them these days and as we don't have one the servicing is palmed off

it is a little strange that they are disposing of one with such low hours

do you get to see if and how it runs?

Yes - it would be good to know why it was disposed of.

I dont get to see how it runs before the auction ends but if I go to pick it up and the condition isnt 'excellent' as described, then no cash changes hands and I turn around and go home......

I've used them before, run for weeks at a time only stoping for fill ups.
I would love to get my hands on one.
Do know that not all of them get their regular servcing.
As a lot of diggers just turn them on untill they die, (filters, overloaded)
look for the grey book in the tool kit (GM120) service hitory.
I've seen a lot with less then 300 hr on them. (at work)

I bought an Echo chainsaw in its plastic case with 2 spare bars, 6 chains, all safety gear, manuals etc.
The thing had never even been issued and probably had never been started.
I can remember in 1998 the OTRL for Twin Boom Wreckers was down to Zero Hours.
We had on that crapped a water pump, so we towed it to Bandiana and a bloody big forklift dragged a new one off a shelf.
We degreased it, new battery and a bit of Petrol and off we went.
One 1972 Truck with 22 Miles on the ODO.
We did 2 more that year....

excelent gen sets very well protected from idiots with a shut down for almost everything that might hurt it.

if you know how they start first go everygo unless its cold and then they can be a pig but one you know the tricks to it even thats not too bad.

they usually go because they have glazed up from officers running them for hours on end just to charge their phone/laptop and will no longer make rated power when they need to OR because they have been abused into the ground from poor servicing or putting unleaded into it and running it.

The one I'm looking at now has done 225 hrs (330 hr one has sold).
It supposedly came from a Signals unit and the seller said something about 'special projects' which didnt mean much to me. He picked up a pallet of 3 at an auction recently. According to him it runs well and fired up an small arc welder showing about 20% load on the digital display. That probably isnt much of an indication whether the bore is glazed however

Have also been looking at silenced Chinese diesel gensets which use a copy of the Yanmar in these units - they are cheaper and quieter but a big question mark over the reliability as far as I'm concerned.

even if it is glazed, if your prepared to goto the effort of stripping it and giving the thing a good workover with a bottle brush hone it'll come good again...

you cant overload it enough to let it break its own glazing. (Ive tried) it will run in 10% overload for about 30 seconds and anything more for less than 10.

You often see Defence Forces equipment at auction that is brand new. Exaples that I have bought at auction are P&N large tap and die sets in BSW & BSF. These were current model sets, with an RRP of $750 each. I paid $140 for both. What the hell equipment have our forces had in the last 30-40 years that used obsolete British threads, aside from the officer's MG's and Austin Healeys? I also bought two brand new full special tool kits from General Dynamics for servicing F111 fuselage and air frames. Fitted cases containing machined all over tool room quality jigs and fixtures, long and short twist drills, all 135 degree split point cobalt drills, reamers from 1/8' to 1", all either solid tungsten carbide or TC tipped. I paid $180 for the two. I estimate the cost to buy new was well in excess of $10,000 each.

As well as brand new stuff, you also see identical equipment at the same auction that is totally shagged.
