I've seen police shoot in a lot of comps and many of them were obviously never trained properly and should not be in control of a weapon.

I highly doubt the kid had to die. I did hear they used pepper spray and it didn't work but there are other options.

    Poor fella and his relatives.

    Three on one.
Give the warning, use pepper spray, tackle him from behind, use baton and tackle him, then the gun.
I feel sorry for police to have to deal with this but surely a few burly coppers should have been able to take down a teenager.
You lot have got to be kidding!

Lets see now, 3 coppers took down a wild teenager as per all the circumstances that are now widely known. Yep, thats bad considering none of his many relatives, not to mention his direct family have probably had numerous oportunities to address the issues.

Yep, you must be right, its the Police Departments fault that his family did nothing for years.

    Bad bad coppers.

PS. You might want to contact them and advise them not to attend your address should something like that happen in your street and you family be threatened....... FFS

Around 13 years ago I was one of two officers who disarmed a knife wielding mental patient. The thought of lethal force was in the process of being implemented. The movement of the female patient was all that lead to her still being alive when she turned the knife away from my partner. It was later resolved, but it does not pertain specifically to this current incident. I recommended my junior colleague for a bravery award and it was denied by the powers that be. That incident accompanied with several other serious compounding fatal accidents lead to my retirement on medical from the Police force.

The option of shooting the central mass has been accurately covered. The idea of batons is ludicrous, the P65 plastic T handle batons are only 60cm long. The ASP extendable batons are shorter.

These Police will endure years of reflection not just a month of counseling. I realise a chat room is for the views of every member but some of the opinions expressed here almost need censure, as they seem to only inflame this already volatile situation. Armchair warriors who can shoot like John Wayne if they had to, seem to frequent every incident that involves a Police shooting. People please be considerate and constructive when you are speculating as it does no one actually involved in these incidents any benefit to thrash out ideas in public.

    Thanks

British police do carry batons but the vast majourity of British police do NOT carry firearms.

If this incident occurred in the UK the chances are that it would be attended by ordinary coppers first carrying batons and mace type spray but they would most likely be wearing some form of body protection.

There have been cases where local police have responded to call outs and been confronted with armed criminals and landed up being shot dead.

Britain does not have armed police on routine patrol on the streets. Occassionaly you will see armed police at airports and this still surprises me and frightens me that society has got to that stage.

Most British cities would have a police car carrying firearms on patrol but they are unlikely to be the first car on the scene of a violent incident.

Personally I hope that the vast majourity of British police can carry on NOT carrying firearms.

    Regards

    Brendan

One quick thought, if you where trying to take on x3 coppers with guns by your self with a meat cleaver or two you must be nuts or spaced out.

The cops facing someone who is nuts or spaced out coming at you with a meat cleaver, I mean, what would you do!

    Excessive force my Ar$3

Its sad when anyone dies but rather this kid than some innocent bystander or a cop; when faced with situations like that they should not have to justify it. The kid is the guilty one not the cops.

My understanding was that there were a lot more armed officers in the UK now and that there is a big push from within the service to arm all officers. I think the days of the softly softly, civilised approach died out when civil libertarians stepped into the Court system and grubs lost their fear and respect for coppers. That combined with freely available heavy drugs has brought the ugly side of life into the public spotlight a lot more.
Dont ask me for the answers, i dont have them.

police have a very hard job, i couldn't do it, most people can't, an that's why we have to be behind them, they are there to keep us all safe, an keep us with our familys
You are proving very wise my young friend...

Intelligent choices will give you a long and fruitful life...

And my greatest thanks to the members of all our Police Forces...

You have been there when I needed you to help me...

And there when I forgot myself! Your decision to stop my reckless (driving) acts of my youth is most likely the reason I live to be here today.

May the members of VicPol find comfort in the knowledge they are valued and that they did the right thing based on the situation.

This is all very sad...for all concerned. My information is that the lad had an argument at home and armed himself with knives. Relatives then disarmed him and he fled the house and went to the shopping centre where he stole the two cleavers, he apparently bunged on a bit of a turn there and slashed up a few boxes. Staff rang the Police who confronted the boy. He was given ample opportunities to comply with directions. He then cornered one of the Police and was gased....several times. He was then shot in the limbs (believe leg) but when he continued his assault upon the Officer he was 'put down'. I have no problems with this. For all of those who say that the Police should have tackled him...all I have to say is "You Try it". It is all very well to be wise in hindsight and make suggestions as what should have happened........But we were not there and none of us have any idea as to how events were escalating.

This so called supremist group he was alledged to belong to the 'Southern Cross Soldiers' is in fact a 'gaming' clan for on-line war gaming.

My heart goes out to the parents of the lad and to the Officers involved and their families

....and just to put a more human face to the event ...this is the lad that died
