there's always bamboo, hundreds of varieties....

one growing locally, known as "Black Bamboo", is abt 3m and doesn't seem to be a problem with drains etc

oh... re-read your post... has to be native I guess

    7 or 8 years for most Acacia I've grown - except Blackwoods - now there's a tree.

I was just thinking about screening also, but would like something that grows taller - already have 6ft fence, but 2 storey house - would like to block neighbours - lets see if they poison the next tree we plant

These neighbours don't seem to like tall trees - to the extend they even had a specialist come in to check the gum tree across the road on Council land in the hope that he'd say it had to be cut or trimmed - oops sorry shouldn't start

Anyway would the same or similar trees work in SE Qld

.....give them 50 or 70 years and you will have a small fortune in timber which you can sell.......I read somewhere that Tasmanian Oak ,(Eucalyptus delegatensis / Eucalyptus regnans / Eucalyptus obliqua)[Eucalyptus regnans, known variously by the common names Mountain Ash, Victorian Ash, Swamp Gum, Tasmanian Oak or Stringy Gum, is a species of Eucalyptus native to southeastern Australia, in Tasmania and Victoria. It is known to attain heights over 100 metres and is described as the tallest of the flowering plants]
The name Tasmanian Oak is used to describe three species of Eucalypt commonly found in Tasmania, is very fast growing and is suitable for growing in most regions ( other than arid), gives a nice straight bole and good top cover. Well worth considering.

Just bringing this thread back rather than starting a new one.

I am looking for some fast growing native trees to provide a screen along our lower fenceline. Probably a bit taller than have been mentioned in this thread. Ideally say 3/4 or 5m tall, maybe even more.

    This is for SE Qld.

Would like to buy them already at a metre or two high.

What would people recommend? Or should I just drop in on our local plant/tree place?

Not too keen on Gum trees I dont think.

We've done the same as Slunnie, but our soil is a bit rich for most Grevilleas and so they aren't doing so well, (chocolate/black basalt) although Silky Oaks (Grevillea Robusta ) thrive here. (but don't plant them, they tend to drop branches and themselves a bit)
    Banksias just die here

The fastest growing trees on our place ATM are Lemon Scented Gums and and Willow Gums, oh, and our Claret Ash are storming ahead in this wet season. They are outdoing all the other trees, including the deciduous (we've planted well over 150 trees twelve months ago)
All the natives went in as el-cheapo tube stock from the State Forrests nursery and we hardly lost anything in the first frosts. (Lemon Scenteds aren't supposed to be very frost tolerant)
Don't plant G robusta. It has a very aggressive root system and will find the sewer and becomes weedy. Not a wise choice in suburban yards. Lemon scented gums are snappy gums.

Grevillea 'elegance' is a cultivar not a species.

Lilllypilly are a good screen but plant and you can get different varieties depending on your requirements. Choose species for your soil type.

For a tall screening hedge, try one of the Lilly Pillys - Acmena Smithii or Waterhousea Floribunda. Both will need pruning otherwise they grow into a rather large tree.
