Thread: Tree's.......... i want to plant a fast growing Gum and some screening natives

Clarkie wanted a tree for his son to climb when he gets older.

IMHO you just can't find a better tree for climbing than a Cedar Wattle.

They are a large fast growing native wattle that are attractive and have a lot of large flowers. But they drop a lot of leaves and dead flowers.

They grow well enough when not in a rainforest environment. I had one in the yard for many years, and have noticed a lot growing on the edge of the F3 between Sydney and Gosford.

Proibably in pockets or gullies of old wet sclerophyll forest.

Yes, but they have high water requirements. Have had one in my parents backyard and it has died back with the ongoing lack of rainfall in southern Sydney. It is a 20yo tree at about 15 m. Given that Victoria is having a a harder time of it wrt rainfall and is not expected to get any better any time soon it may not be the wisest choice.

Do not know where in Victoria your place is, not knowing Victoria well. But some sorts of Trees are more bushfire resistant than others. If you are in a bush-fire area cosider trees that are more fire resistant.

Can update this one actually, I forgot! I bought 4 of 3.5m or so tall Waterhosea Floribundas back in January. All going well still now.

Excellent quick growing screening plant that can tolerate a bit of pruning to keep in control is Bracelet Honey Myrtle (Melaleuca armillaris). Would grow very well in Mooroolbark. They can grow to 7 or 8 metres (need lots of water to do that) but 4 metres would be more the usual in cultivation. Use tube stock as this will produce the best root growth and establishment. Larger plant stock will often sit for a year with essentially no growth after replanting. After 12-18 months tube stock can ofter be more advanced.

Silky oaks will also clog up your drains, and the leaves make a huge mess.

Leighton pines will grow real quick, not sure if native, but might grow taller than you need.
