I think Mythbusters debunked this one? ;)
Poor old Cubby Station! Never fear, we will have massive flooding in the Queensland catchment area of the Darling and its tributaries one of these days, we will all be whinging about the high cost of flood relief etc and then 3 months later after millions of dollars of damage to fruit crops and dairy farms cause en route, Murray Bridge will be flooded and South Australia can have some water again.
An interesting little aside on the state of the Murray, in 1988 (bicentennial year) a paddle steamer event was set out and re enacted as part of the celebrations, but unfortunately the participants couldn't complete the whole course, as they were grounded at exactly the same spot that stopped the boats precisely one hundred years earlier.
Should one drive or sail down the Murray and take note of the phenomenonal amount of water that is syphoned off en route through both Victoria and South Australia for agricultural purposes you will wonder, as do I, how the heck SA has lasted this long.

Glen
