I love my disco but an auto tdi defender would make me switch vehicles, i have a 22 mo and a 5 1/2 yo and think the extra luggage space of a defender would be better for touring - not sure how i will cram all the crap 2 young girls need into a disco without towing a trailer or making it top heavy with a full rack.
Given these roles / circumstances I;d say go for the Defender.Quote:

Why don't you get on the www.britishoffroad website and have a look at what's in their second vehicle lineup, there are Defenders, Discos, and Rangies all with the prices displayed, it would be worthwhile to go up and test drive 1 or 3 then you can compare between the Deefer and the Disco, their vehicles have been well checked and serviced before being put on the sales list.
It's about 2 hrs from the border straight up the M1 all you have to do is pay the gateway bridge toll North and South :) ask for Paul;)

hi all thanks for your opinions greatly appreciated will be test driving some on thursday so hopefully will be able to make up my mind then i think i'm starting to sway towards defender all the missus wants is aircon, so i'm pretty sure most come with that don't they?

If AC is a major factor - a Disco will most likely suit you better as the AC in Defenders prior to the Puma model is pretty ordinary.
I'm an unashamed Deefer pusher. I test drove a Disco because we couldn't find a second hand Deefer but I'm glad I held out.
Yes the Deefer is very capable off road as previous posts state.
I read an article in the Open Road a couple of years ago where people said what they would like in a car and one woman with kids said "A car I can hose out". The Defender is your vehicle.
But people say they are no good in the city. CRAP!! I have driven Falcons and a Paj in Sydney and give me the Deefer any day.
First, it has a presence that can give you an edge or at least command a little respect, especially when filthy.
Second, it's shape means you are very aware of the extremities. It is very easy to control and manuvre because of this.
Third, i have NEVER found any vehicle easier to park, see point two, and the fact that it has a smaller footprint that a Commodore.

Deefa's are better out of the box off road but with the standard mods (2" lift, taller rubber) then the Disco comes on par if not better due to it's smaller read diff and better departure and ramp over angles.
Deefa's are great for a young family as when the kids are younger they take up heaps more room than they do when they are bigger.
Either will be good but if your planing on buying a manual and you can put up with substandard heating, aircon, fit and finish of panels, the odd leak when it rains then I would buy the Deefa.
If you want an auto or manual and can put up with....the odd leak on rainy days, poor fit and finish, the need to be tinkering with it all the time and a lack of on board luggage room then buy a Disco.
Or maybe go in between and get a RRC, gets rid of most of the problems but only comes mainly in V8 and auto
We love Defenders and have had a few. Also have a Disco which we use for running around town and short trips. The Defender is a more rugged vehicle and I enjoy driving both. Disco has more creature comforts, but it all comes down to a personal choice.:D
As a bit of a funny side track to this thread, I had the Defender parked in front of our local butcher the other day and he commented ..."You've got that old girl looking in good condition". I told him it was less than 2 years old and had just over 20,000ks on the clock. His comment was that they all look the same on the outside, which is fair enough I suppose...for a novice.
