Certainly some were - I saw not too long ago a medallion engraved by a first fleet convict was sold; the engraver was on the ship because of his engraving skills, which he had used to make dies for striking coins and plates for printing banknotes and other negotiable documents. I seem to remember that he came to a sticky end (on a rope) only a few months after landing, when it became apparent that he had not reformed.

I have also heard of a skilled mason being transported because he was convicted of having too many wives; in this case his skill was irrelevant to his conviction.

I am sure there were other cases of skilled workmen being transported.

I always thought or believed that it referred to the smell of those who were still wearing woolen shirts and washed once a year, after arriving ashore following the 6months of being cooped up. As judged by those who arrived earlier and had adjusted to the climate and dressed accordingly as well as discovering that washing reduced the number of skin ulcers etc etc,

There was a program on TV a few nights ago. About the second lot of women that were sent out, and how well they did. From petty thief to well respected business woman etc. At the end of the program there was reference to, that with the removal of CLASS and the presentation of opportunity was a major redeeming influence.
Also what I found surprising was the number of convicts who after finishing there sentence decided to return to England. LOL bet there descendants are a bit nifed now LOL

As The Title say " Aulro is a great place " , I 've made many friends from spending time on here and learnt quite a lot about what people do / eat / how they spend their leisure time with their families, even know who loves oysters on here , and that has been quite interesting , As most of you would know I'm not from an australian Heritage , infact I was born overseas and migrated when I was 13 yrs old , so I can sympathise with some of you who have migrated to OZ and not just from Britain but from other parts of the globe. As was mentioned here ,there is a Common denominator that brings us closer , Landrovers. :)

Ruddy 'eck folks. I just started this thread to say a BIG thank you to ALL the people on here that have given me help over the past couple of years that I have been coming on here.

OK I did cheekily mention the Aussies on here. :p Did not expect a major discussion on geneology but found the bits about the derivative of POMS both interesting and amusing. Nor did I intend WW3 to break out between inner and outer circles or mods v users, correct spelling etc.

I know Aussies like to whinge, even though they refer to Poms as whinging barstewards. Most Aussies whinge more then Poms! :p


How do you get an Aussie to whinge?? Mention the price of fuel! Want to get him to go into the whinging stratosphere? Tell the whing Aussie how cheap is fuel is

Well I think aulro is a great place too. I've l learnt heaps; from td5 faults to Series Land Rover knowledge to how to catch myna birds!!!

Spent tonight showing the ol man how to join aulro, post, and navigate the site. He's had his D3 for two months now and I've been encouraging him to come on board.


I think he's still p...ed off that I'm using his nickname:p

Arthur Phillip had nine months or so to prepare before the First Fleet left, and hand picked individuals for their skills, as well as for a range of ages and tried to keep an even ratio of men to women.

There is also some evidence that he wanted to escape the class system. Or, perhaps more close to the truth, couldn't see a place for it in the penal colony.

You could consider the division between convict and marine/soldier as a particularly strict class divide, except that very early on in the piece - first few weeks - Phillip got into strife with Collins - in charge of marines - when Collins wouldn't allow his men to act as prison guards. Phillip had to promote convicts from the ranks to 'supervise' their companions.

In my interpretation this situation is one of the formative events in Australian history that makes our relationships to authority what it is.
